Today we celebrate the official birthday of shelter and rescue dogs everywhere! 💙
While many adopted pups don't have a known birthdate, DOGust gives them all a special day to be celebrated. Join us in wishing every shelter and rescue dog a very happy birthday! Whether they're still waiting for their forever family, or already living their best life at home, today is all about them!!

⭐ Fun Fact Friday!! ⭐

Did you know that younger dogs and cats can be made up of up to 80% water?

To put this in perspective, humans are only made up of 55 to 60% water! As these animals grow, their body water percentage gradually decreases, which makes proper hydration during this early stage of life especially important. Both cats and dogs, on average, need about one ounce of water per pound of their body weight daily. So be sure to always have plenty of clean, fresh water available, know how much water your pet needs, and know the signs of dehydration!

Introducing: ⭐ Fun Fact Fridays!! ⭐

Did you know that dogs primarily cool themselves by panting because they have very few sweat glands?

Unlike humans, dogs are unable to cool themselves by sweating. They have very few sweat glands, mostly located on their paw pads. In order to release any excess body heat, they take rapid and shallow breaths. This then causes moisture to evaporate from their tongue, mouth, and upper respiratory tract, which naturally brings their body temperature down!

Independence Day is almost here!!
Now is the perfect time to check your pet's medications and make sure you're prepared for the holiday weekend. Fireworks and other festivities can be stressful for many pets, so don't wait until the last minute to refill prescriptions or schedule an appointment.
Reminder: Our offices will be closed on Saturday, July 4th.
If your pet does need a medication refill or an appointment before the holiday, please contact one of our clinics as soon as possible so that we can assure your pets have a safe and comfortable holiday!

The 4th of July is quickly approaching, and we want to share a couple tips to help keep your pets safe this holiday!🇺🇸

If your pet is outdoors, be sure that they have plenty of fresh water and shade. Also, ensure that they are kept away from any grills or open flames.

While it may be tempting to share holiday treats, avoid giving them table scraps or other people food.🌭

Fireworks can be extremely stressful, and potentially dangerous, to dogs and cats. To help keep them calm and safe:
- Try and keep pets indoors
- Exercise them during the day to tucker them out
- Consider using toys or treats to provide comfort and distraction
- Make sure that they are wearing a collar with up to date I.D. tags

More pets go missing on the 4th of July than any other day of the year. With a little preparation, you can help to ensure a safe and happy holiday for you, and your pets!

Celebrating the team members who make VWP a great place for pets and people.
This week: Gabrielle

Gabrielle is a veterinary assistant who has been working in the veterinary field since the beginning of 2025 and has been part of the practice since October. She has spent her entire life caring for a wide variety of animals, which led her to pursue a degree in Equine Studies with a training concentration. Gabrielle gained hands-on experience working at an equine hospital in Wilmington, North Carolina for nine months before joining VWP.

She enjoys building meaningful relationships with her fellow team members, clients, and patients, and is passionate about continuing to learn and grow in her role each day. Gabrielle has always had a deep love for animals, making a career in veterinary medicine a natural path for her.

At home, Gabrielle has two beloved horses—Pete, a 16-year-old Quarter Horse, and Mr. Darcy, her Half-Arab yearling—as well as four cats. Her horses are her main hobby, but she also enjoys reading and crocheting in her free time. While horses are her favorite animals, she says if she could have any exotic animal, it would be an elephant.

Planning a trip with your pet? Prior to traveling, there are a few different steps that you should take to ensure your pet's safety!✈️🚗

If you are traveling by air:
- Try to book direct flights
- Check that vaccines are up to date
- Consider a checkup prior to flying
- Be sure to give potty breaks frequently
- Follow all airline policies to ensure safety

If you are traveling by car:
- Consider acclimating your pet to car rides
- Make frequent stops
- Make sure you have plenty of your pet's necessities
- Ensure that your pet has plenty of space

A little preparation goes a long way towards a safe and happy adventure for both you and your pet!🗺️🐾

This time of year, we receive questions concerning fawns and other native wildlife that appear to be abandoned. Because of this, we wanted to share some tips on what to do if you ever find a wild animal that is in need.

Observe the animal from a distance and assess the situation.

Do NOT touch or pick up the animal, give it food or water, try to care for it yourself, or move it unless it is in immediate danger.

Do NOT bring them to the clinic. Veterinary clinics are not legally permitted to treat or provide care for native wild animals.

If you are unsure of the situation, call a wildlife rehabilitator for guidance.
