You're always prepared for a loss when you sign up to take care of elderly animals. It's a part of the job. But losing our little buddy Buff threw us all for a loop. I think he was already 16 when we started caring for him four years ago. He was such a genteel old man. He was very talkative, quick to criticize your meal preparation speed, and he had a long list of complaints when his parents would go away. But we all patiently listened to his kvetching, while rubbing his belly or scratching his ears or brushing his coat. He was a gentle old soul and will be very missed.
