Thank you for all the love you have for Don,
he would be embarrassed by all the "love"..
He LOVED training people to train dogs.. We would sit and talk in the office for hours talking training...
he --was part dog __ LOL I think - he could read a dog so well...
I remember when I first started working for him-- there was a reactive German Shepard boarding with us.. it was scared-- I had to go in the run and loop a lead over its head.. it was frantically running back and forth !! i said shes going to bite me... he said " no she wont.. and if she does - it'll be a small bite !!! LOL I always bring that up to him !!! oh and no I didnt get bit !!! so much info on training !!! I can say I never stopped learning something while working with Don,, and he did say I helped his sense of humor !!

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Don Sterling at the age of 83.

In his own words, he “lived a good, long life,” with his only regret being that he would no longer be able to continue learning. Don had a deep love for history and an even greater passion for dog training. Widely regarded as one of the best in the world, he traveled to Germany, China, and Canada to lecture and share his knowledge, something he truly loved.

Don began his career with a short time at the Guide Dog Foundation, where he learned from an influential trainer. He joined the police department in 1965 and became one of the original members of the K-9 unit in 1966. In 1973, he purchased the property that would become Quail Run Kennel, building it from the ground up while still serving on the police force. Over time, it grew into one of the largest kennels on Long Island.

He was a past president of the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA), where he also served as a trial judge. During his 20 years as a K-9 handler, Don competed and won numerous trophies. He contributed training articles to the USPCA’s magazine, Canine Courier, for over 20 years, and his work was also featured in K9 Cop and Police K9 magazines.

In 1998, Don partnered with a friend to start Canine Consultants, a K-9 detection company. Following the events of 9/11, they worked with the American Stock Exchange for two and a half years.

Don’s legacy lives on through the countless people and dogs he trained, mentored, and inspired.

The kennel is still operating and will continue on !!
