“Fear-Free” is a buzz word that I’ve heard thrown around quite a bit. And if I’m quite honest, it’s driving me crazy.
Let's Talk About What “fear free” Actually Means.
Fear is not bad. Fear is normal and often essential for survival.
If your dog is nervous about grooming, vet appointments, or going to new places, that's not a flaw, that's a dog being a dog.
But here's the problem: "fear-free" has become code for permissive.
Letting a dog scream in a crate? Not okay.
Letting a dog bite, flail, and use their head as a weapon during nail trims? Not okay.
Using fear as an excuse to avoid setting boundaries? Not okay.
Is there anything that we can do actually do about it?
Yes, yes, yes!!
It all starts with slow slowing down and taking the time to desensitize our dogs to environments and equipment and conditioning them to change their emotional response. This is why I have decided to train my team and offer Desensitization and Conditioning Sessions. These will be short, 15-minute visits where your dog gets to explore the studio, meet a member of the team, and have a genuinely positive experience in the environment. No grooming. No pressure. Just the goal to earn your dog’s trust and build a relationship with them. As a bonus each handler will go home with homework to make future experiences even better.
These sessions are available now. If you'd like to learn more or book a session for your dog, click the link below or send us a message. Our team will be happy to talk through what a session will look like for your dog.
Also, if you’ve read this entire post and made it this far, please share. This is a very unique service and can change a lot of lives for the better. Especially our puppies ❤️❤️
