Hey, folks. We need to talk about a little problem that comes with being a no-kill shelter: being FULL.
And when I say full, I mean FULL.
In the last couple of days alone, we've taken in a large number of animals unexpectedly. Some of those have even been return adoptions.
One thing we want people to understand is that we have a policy of taking back animals adopted from us. Always. If an adoption doesn't work out or circumstances change, we want that animal to come back to us rather than end up somewhere unsafe or unwanted.
Ideally, we can coordinate a return so that we have space available and the animal can go straight into a regular kennel or room rather than having to spend time in a temporary cage bay. But life doesn't always give us that luxury. Sometimes situations happen, and we have to make room however we can.
This is also a good time for a little reminder about responsible pet ownership.
If you're considering adopting, think about what's coming down the road. Planning to move soon? Make sure your new home and circumstances will accommodate your pets. Thinking about adopting a kitten? Consider whether you have the time, environment, and enrichment to keep that little ball of energy entertained.
There's a reason we often encourage people to adopt two kittens together. They wear each other out instead of wearing YOU out. 😉
We know we've said it before, and we'll probably say it again, but we are really, really, REALLY full right now.
Most animal shelters, including ours, don't have endless space, endless resources, or endless staff. We want to do right by every animal in our care. That means providing adequate food, medical attention, clean and comfortable housing, and yes, a little love and attention, too.
When we're overloaded, all of those things become harder to manage.
We appreciate your patience. We appreciate your support. We appreciate everyone who adopts, fosters, donates, volunteers, and advocates for the animals.
And one last thing: Please be kind to your local shelter workers. They're doing their best, they're juggling a lot, and they've had a bit of a rough week.
Adopt thoughtfully. Plan responsibly. Be patient. Be kind.
