NNHS is a nonprofit a 501(c)3 charitable organization that focuses on animal welfare and serves communities in Northwest Missouri. We invite anyone who has interest in promoting responsible pet care in our community, whether you are a volunteer, a donor, a business or pet lover. You can get involved in a variety of ways:

Be a buddy - For $10 each month, you can sponsor a shelter animal. You can a

lso visit your buddy, spending quality time to learn more about its personality. Some sponsors also pay for spaying/neutering to help with the animal's adoption. Be an angel - For $50 each month, your donation will help offset the operating costs of the shelter, including utilities, wages and vet bills. You can sign up as an individual, a family, a business or an organization. Rescue transport - Some of our animals are not adoptable in our community, due to age or medical condition. However, we have located reputable rescue organizations throughout the country who have the time and resources to train these animals for adoption or place them in quality foster homes. The shelter helps transport these animals across the country. You can help by offering your time to drive a short leg of the trip (often 2 hours) to help these animals travel to their new homes. Volunteer - Drop by the shelter and learn about how we care for our animals. You can take them for walks, play with them outside the cages and help us find homes for them. Organize a fundraiser - We LOVE our community, which is full of tender-hearted individuals of all ages who are determined to assist us with our mission. If you have an idea for a fundraiser, we'd be happy to hear your idea. Contact us today at [email protected] with any questions!

☀️ Dog Days of Summer: Tank☀️
Tank is a 4-year-old Heeler/Bluetick mix weighing in at 45 pounds of personality. This handsome boy recently found himself in the shelter after his owner could no longer afford to care for him, and the sudden changes have been stressful for him. Despite that, Tank's affectionate nature still shines through.

Described as both active and a couch potato, Tank is the best of both worlds. He loves getting out for adventures and has excellent leash manners, but he's equally happy curling up beside his favorite person for some quality cuddle time.

Since being at the shelter, Tank has made friends with older, calmer dogs here. He's also shown to be very friendly with indoor cats, but because he has previously chased and injured outdoor cats that run away, a cat-savvy home and careful management are important considerations.

🐾 During our Dog Days of Summer event, ALL dog adoption fees have waived! Approved application required.

Update on Stanley.

Sunday evening we posted a heartbreaking photo of bloody Pit mix puppy. After the overwhelming response to that post, the owners came forward and let us know what happened.

While the owners were away from home, the puppy was attacked by another dog in the house. The owners were shocked to find the injured puppy when they returned. It was after hours and without the financial means to seek medical care, they didn’t know what to do. Thinking they were out of options, they took the puppy to MPS and said they found it in the park. That’s where NNHS enters.

The next day, we took Stanley (as we’ve named him) to the vet. His wounds were cleaned, debrided (removing dead or damaged skin) and sutured. His face is swollen and he is on a heavy dose of antibiotics for two weeks. Stanley goes back to the vet on the 26th for a follow-up and get his stitches out.

Many have asked how they can help. If you are so inclined, you can make a donation to help cover his vet bill which currently stands at $90. Any money raised over that will go to his daily housing/care and preparing him for adoption (ie neuter, vaccinations, etc).

Thank you for your continued support! 🧡🐾

☀️ Dog Days of Summer: Diego☀️
Can you keep a secret? Diego is so irresistible that he goes home with our staff over the lunch break. He walks super well on the leash, but does like to jump on people. Which happens a lot because he loves all people and wants all the pets.

Diego is super, super calm for his breed until he meets another dog and then he's very excited and ready to play! While he LOVES other dogs, he is too focused on cats for our liking.

And we can't be for sure because he is a stray, but Diego is showing signs he may be housebroken. He asks to go potty every time he needs to and continues to do so while hanging out up front with the staff.

☀️ Dog Days of Summer: Kingsley☀️
Kingsley is a handsome 5-year-old Akita mix weighing in at 75 pounds of love, loyalty, and playful energy. This affectionate boy enjoys spending time with his people and thrives on attention and companionship. He's gentle, smart, walks nicely on a leash, rides well in the car, and loves toys—especially stuffed animals, balls, and ropes!

Kingsley has lived successfully with men, women, children, and other dogs. In fact, he previously shared a home with a 3-year-old child and absolutely loves kids. While he can be a little shy when meeting new people, his sweet personality shines through once he feels comfortable.

As an active dog with plenty of energy, Kingsley would love a home with room to run and play. He knows "sit" and "lay down" (when he's feeling cooperative!) and is always ready for fun adventures with his family.

Kingsley does experience separation anxiety and can become destructive or make messes if left alone for long periods. Because of this, he's looking for a patient, understanding family that can help him feel secure and give him the time, attention, and love he needs to succeed.

If you're looking for a loyal companion who will be your shadow, your playmate, and your best friend, Kingsley may be the perfect match for you!
