This weekend we celebrated Dezra’s 12 year Gotcha Day! Dezra has been a part of our family for 12 years! She’s going on 13 years of age and still going strong.

I had no idea how much Dezra would impact our lives. She changed the trajectory of mine. I can honestly say I am a dog trainer because of her. In fact, she is my logo. She helped teach me patience and acceptance. I learned to how to bring out the best in dogs because of her. I love this girl so much.

Attached is an article I wrote for Pets and Their People a couple of years ago.

Meet Max! He is a four-month-old Shiba Inu puppy. He is cute, full of energy and ready to learn!

He’s also a great reminder that reinforcement drives behavior. Instead of saying “no” to your puppy all the time, find ways to say “yes” instead. Remember they are learning, using positive reinforcement and “yes” gives your puppy the feedback they need to learn the behaviors you want them to engage in. They are repeating the behaviors that feel good. Make the behaviors you want them to engage in feel good, so they repeat those behaviors.

Oh adolescence . . . you made it through the puppy period and maybe you even had a few months of peace. But now your cute puppy is a big, clumsy, mouthy, jumpy adolescent who no longer seems to listen. They may even be showing signs of fear and/or reactivity that they never showed before.

What happened? Just like human teenagers Rosie, Milo, Lucy and Ladybird are going through hormonal changes. Their brains are still developing. As a result, they are not making the best decisions or may not “hear” what you are saying.

And just like their human counterparts, they test boundaries, have increased energy and impulsivity, take more risks, and seek greater independence.

This period can start as early as 6 months old last until they are a year and a half or two years old depending on the breed and size of the dog.

If you are looking for help, I am here for you. I have lots of experience working with teenage dogs and their human counterparts. [email protected] or 770-971-6093

Patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement are key.

With packages of 5 or more training sessions, we include getting out and about in the real world. Milo loved his recent visit out and about. He got a lot of attention and we worked on greetings.

Yes, you CAN teach an old dog new tricks! And I highly encourage you to do so!

There are lots of benefits to teaching your old dog a new trick. It’s fun for you and your dog. It strengthens your bond. Helps to keep your older dog mentally engaged. And in some cases, gets them moving as well.

I introduced Dezra, going on 13, Hank going on 12, and Joanie going on 10 to “roll it”. It’s easy to teach, simply put a treat or a piece of kibble under a ball and cue “roll it”. They will roll the ball to get to the treat. When they do say “yes”. As they start to learn what you are asking, they will “roll it” without the lure. When they do that, then reward with a treat after they roll it.

Here’s Dez doing her thing!

Don’t assume your “old” dog can’t learn anything new. They certainly can and they want to! It’s so important to give your older dog opportunities to learn and experience new things.

Meet Lily! She is all puppy! Happy and energetic! Lily was adopted from Dirt Road Doggies Rescue.

We are working on learning some self regulation, including “settle” and more calm introductions to new people. She’s doing great!

She, like many puppies loves to steal socks. We have been working on that as well. Sweet girl gets an A for the day!

I offer different packages to fit your needs: Lily and her people started with a puppy package and then shifted to day training for some more intense and frequent training. Day training is a great option for busy families.

Lily is a great puppy and going to be a phenomenal family dog!

There are lot of amazing puppies and dogs in need of a loving home. Please check out rescues, your local shelter and the Humane Society when you are ready to add a dog to your family.

Bring out the best in your dog!

What do I enjoy seeing as much as a smile on a dog's face…....the top of their head when they are sniffing!

Sniffing is an important dog behavior. Research shows that sniffing reduces their heart rate. It's like us, breathing helps us relax.

Snuffle mats are a great way to encourage sniffing. I like using them for greetings too. We love our snuffle mats. All my training packages come with a snuffle mat, Best in Dog branded treat pouch and treats.

Meet Koby and Jasper! We are having a great time together! Both are learning a lot with day training. We are working on greetings, some basic skills including leash walking skills, and trying some fun new enrichment.

Day training is a great option for busy families. It’s efficient, effective, and convenient. I do the “heavy lifting”. I work with your dog individually, on specific skills and/or behaviors, in your home at least two times a week. Once a week I meet with you and your dog to transfer those skills. We will practice what your dog has learned together and apply it to real world.
