Fiji was discovered after many days left unattended in her RV. We would have loved to keep her in our program (not every day we see a pug!) but with not enough fosters for all the dogs we are trying to help, and upon learning that Fiji had a host of medical needs (a raging UTI, pannus requiring lifetime management and being heartworm+), we did what was best for her and asked our friends for help and they said yes!

Fiji had a great team of neighbors, Pecos Animal Shelter staff, vets and rescues looking out for her, and then joined her corner too, with pilot Adam flying over to Pecos on just a few hours’ notice and delivering her to safety (and a foster home) in Dallas!

While all *that* was going down, our team was also driving 4 big dogs from Terlingua Ranch and the McCamey Animal Shelter to their meetup in Junction, TX, to travel on to briefly before becoming adoptable pets with in Chicago! It was 14 hours on the road in a carefully orchestrated campaign.

It’s all pretty incredible and made possible by years of hard work, great pets, and positive relationships! Happy Friday from a proud and grateful (and tired) OTAT-West Texas! ❤️

MOST WANTED: A foster for Neith!
This five-month-old retriever mix is all wiggles, wonder, and warmth—but Neith needs out of the Pecos Animal Shelter now. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the shelter is closing May 26 through June 9. Every dog must find a safe place to go.

Neith is the smallest of her litter but don’t let that fool you. She’s got a big heart, a playful spark, and a growing love for snuggles. Initially shy, she opens up quickly—especially around other dogs and kids (as young as 3). She’s spayed/vaccinated/chipped, around 30 lbs, and fully prepped to charm her way into your home (and lap).

This girl didn’t ask to grow up in a shelter. But she is asking for someone to give her a chance for a couple weeks- or forever. Can that someone be you?

Neith is:
- A 5-6 month old Retriever Mix girl
- Dog and kid friendly (and likely good with cats)
- Needs a foster home as soon as possible
- Supported with all supplies and a great community!

It’s National Rescue Dog Day and early this morning, 6 new rescue pups came onto the scene, joining their rescue dog mom, Pepper. Their birth was easy and safe - a perfect 6 for 6 - and Pepper took right to mothering, clearly so full of pleasure and pride.

It’s been a bit of a slog lately and who would have thought more dogs in need would bring a shift to more positive perspective… But there you have it, in a nutshell: the miracle of a rescue dog and the magic of the community of folks who support them. These 6 pups were born as OTAT pups and, as always, we rededicate ourselves to helping them (and Pepper, of course!) have great lives because we were all lucky enough to cross paths.

Lots of hard, sad stuff are the reasons dogs need rescue, but it’s an incredible heart-bursting wonder that so many people stand on the other side of that for creatures in need. However you celebrate, we hope you do. It’s important. ❤️

Feelgood Friday: the people make the difference! A Good Samaritan found a stray dog and because he was headed to Pecos, he drove him over 100 miles to the Pecos Shelter.

The shelter found a microchip but the info went to a disconnected number. The finder agreed to keep the dog safe overnight and our rescue coordinator Rose got to work. After a couple of hours searching social media posts her hard work paid off and she found the frantic lost dog post she’d been looking for!

This husky’s family and just moved and their husky got loose and was disoriented. The finder drove him 100 miles back to the his finders for a very happy reunion, and Rose helped them update their microchip info. There couldn’t be any better evidence for how better staffed shelter programs (or shelter-rescue partnerships, in our case) serve both pets and people. What a win!

A lot of people do a lot of heroics to make the magic happen for these dogs!

Bombas’ day started in the Van Horn Shelter with the news that he got the golden ticket from , given to him by a ready and willing foster with . The hustle ensued and by noon he was headed for the vet, by close of business he was lounging with his one night host, come the middle of the night he’ll be headed for his plane, and by this time tomorrow he’ll be settling into that Portland life!

It’s so moving to see the spirit of collaboration and the ways that many hands make light (ish) work. Good boy, Bombas! You’ve got a huge team cheering you on. So many thanks to everyone who rallied on short notice to make this possible!

Sheba did us all so proud with her bravery and good cheer at our adoption event last Saturday. She didn’t get adopted but she did great with a lot of hubbub, off leash dogs, and accepting affection from strangers! This easy, low maintenance gal is looking for a kindred spirit to mostly homebody with, though the occasional market trip will be fine with her to! Sheba is 5 years old and 44 lbs. She is happy to share her home with other dog and/or cats. Please share!
