BIG NUMBER ALERT!! Tonight Apple and Empire are but two of 5️⃣5️⃣ pets settled in to foster homes!! We understand if you need to read that twice!! An incredible 44 dogs and 11 cats are safe, happy, enriched, getting meds if they need them, sleeping on soft beds and getting so many snuggles in foster.

We are so in awe of the way our community has stretched to try to stay one step ahead of a shelter that is always running out of space. The Pecos, Alpine and Presidio shelters are all overfull and were it not for our fosters, our 55 shelter pets wouldn’t be here and neither would the ones heading to bed in their shelter kennels.

We promise to do our best to make fostering a fun, supported and deeply satisfying experience, so if you’ve ever thought about fostering, take the leap and know that there’s a whole bunch of us here to help out. If you can’t foster, you can make a donation so we can outfit our foster pets with all the things they need! It takes a village, and we love ours for all the difference they make!

We cannot do this alone, we can only do it together! We love this article that tells the rescue story of Dez, a dog whose size, breed, and temperament put him in the highest category of risk, especially in an overwhelmed, remote West Texas shelter.

To know all of the hard work and helpers who made his rescue possible makes seeing his name in print - and his story as an inspiration to others - so gratifying. The cherry on top is that, like so many of our dogs, we are still in touch with Dez and his family, thanks to the incredible partnership that we enjoy with One Tail at a Time PDX and the support we’ve received from Best Friends Animal Society.

The article only follows Dez’ story, but there are always ripple effects that reverberate over both time and space. About three years after Dez was adopted, his family adopted another dog sent from West Texas to OTAT PDX, also from the Alpine shelter.

The miracle of our life-saving partnerships is the story we love most. We hope you enjoy it too!

If our hearts are heavy, is only because they are so full of gratitude for the friendship, medical care, constant acts of service (driver, donor, foster, cheerleader) of of Kimber… and perhaps the most magical thing- her smile through every single moment of it.

Tomorrow, the irreplaceable Kimber trades West Texas for East Texas, and despite the low feeling, we resolve to all smile a little more because we’ve come to depend on how those smiles make us feel. We’ve come to realize what all those smiles have made possible.

Motivated purely by a love of animals, inspired daily to go above and beyond for every single one of them, and skilled expertly at navigating the human-pet bond in both the best of times and the worst of times, it’s hard to imagine the day-to-day operation of our rescue without Kimber.

Fortunately, we are experts at sending loved ones across many miles and remaining deeply connected, and we will do the same with Kimber.

As you point your car and cast your eyes towards a new horizon, we all hope you know how much better you made West Texas by being here. We have learned from you, we saved lives with you, we have loved spending time with you, and we will miss you so much.

Houston, you’re one lucky dog.

Tomorrow our little softball team turns 9 weeks old, which means time is flying - and they’ve been in our care since they were just days old! Bunting, Popfly, Grounded, Slider and Steal have had the benefit of expert parenting (more on Mama Mitt later, but she has been an incredible mom) and a safe and fun foster rearing (with other dogs and cats). These pups are social, friendly, curious, and soft as clouds.

Another blink of the eye they’ll be teenagers so here’s a PSA to move swiftly! These pups are ready for homes!

Did we ever think we’d see Apple on his back, asking for belly rubs? Of course we did! We thought it might take longer, but that special tincture of time, patience, and gentleness worked its magic like it usually does. Of course, letting Apple and Empire (always close by!) grow braver together with the support of each other is a critical part of this recipe too.

They’re doubly wonderful and adoptable still!

Trinity has made it to foster, and while his personality is no stress, just vibes, the humans caring for him (including his veterinarian team) are a bit stressed about how his amputation wound is healing… or not healing.

Trinity is one step closer to the good life but still has miles to go on his healing journey. His wound requires irrigation twice daily and likely will take months to fully heal. Meaning this kid still has a ways to go before he’s ready for adoption. But we are still pulling for him (and still racking up the medical bills)… we hope you all are too!

Please donate to and keep sharing Trinity’s fundraiser! Y’all are amazing for helping us reach our fundraiser goal, giving us the bump to increase it… Spoiler Alert: Trinity’s medical costs already exceed our fundraiser goal so he needs all he can get!

To donate click the button in this post or go to otatwtx.org and let us know your donation is for Trinity!
