At 19 years old, Annie found herself in a Texas animal shelter when she should have been enjoying the comfort of a familiar home. Veterinarians believed she might have only one month left to live. But two women saw her photograph and decided that whatever time she had remaining, she deserved to spend it surrounded by love.

In June 2022, the elderly Labrador mix was surrendered to Dallas Animal Services. According to the information provided at the shelter, Annie had stopped eating and walking. Her gray face and advanced age made her situation especially concerning.

Lauren Siler was traveling home from Alaska when she saw Annie's photograph online. She couldn't stop thinking about the old dog. When she returned to Dallas, she showed the picture to her best friend and roommate, Lisa Flores.

The two contacted The PAWerful Rescue, which had stepped in to help Annie. They learned that her remaining time might be very short. Still, they agreed to foster her, knowing that opening their home could mean facing a painful goodbye almost immediately.

Instead of counting down the days, Lauren and Lisa started filling them with little celebrations.

They created a special bucket list for Annie. She enjoyed birthday parties, holiday celebrations, hamburgers, a professional photo shoot, and plenty of time relaxing with her new family. Sometimes the happiest moments were much simpler, like lying in the sunshine or enjoying attention at home.

Then something wonderful happened. The weeks passed, and Annie kept going.

She celebrated Christmas. She welcomed another year. And in June 2023, the senior dog who had been expected to survive only a month reached her 20th birthday.

Annie passed away shortly afterward, surrounded by people who cared deeply for her. Her final year had become far longer and fuller than anyone expected.

Her story is not about a dog who lived forever. It is about two people who were willing to love an elderly dog even when they knew their time together might be brief.

Annie could not choose how her life began or why she entered a shelter at 19. But thanks to Lauren and Lisa, her last chapter was filled with companionship, small adventures, and a home where she mattered.

Today two very sweet pups came for a visit. Let me introduce Jagger, a young Lab mix and Artemis, a young pitty mix. Two very sweet pups. Jagger knows all af basic comands. He can sit and stay very calmly. Artemis mostly wanted to play. A very happy girl. You can meet these sweet pups at the Lakeshore Humane Society. They are both looking for their forever loving home.

MIND YOUR MANNERS!

The safe, respectful, polite way to interact with a dog.

Imagine a stranger walking up to you, invading your personal space, touching you without consent or maybe cornering or restraining you so you can’t get away.

Would you feel threatened? Would you feel safe? Would you accept this without reacting?

You try to communicate your discomfort, but the person ignores you and continues to touch you, leaving you no choice but to defend yourself.

This is perfectly understandable when it comes to people, but somehow, we often don’t understand that dogs have the same need for space, choice, consent and safety.

Dogs are frequently approached, touched and crowded by people without being given a choice. Their body language signals of stress are not understood or simply ignored.

Then, when a dog growls, snaps or reacts defensively, we act surprised.

One of my own dogs is particularly sensitive to unfamiliar people. If we have visitors, I always ask that they give her space and avoid trying to interact with her.

She needs to make the decision that she feels comfortable enough to approach and interact.

So often, my request is ignored. Sometimes resulting in a reactive response from my dog. The person is then genuinely shocked - What's wrong with your dog? Why is she so aggressive!

The real question should be - why wasn't her need for space respected?

Her personal space had been invaded, she had not been given the opportunity to feel safe or choose to engage. When her body language didn’t work to keep the person at a distance, her behaviour escalated.

We expect people to respect our personal boundaries. We expect to have a say in who touches us, when and where they touch us and if it’s acceptable. Why should it be different for dogs?

Dogs are not public property. They are sentient individuals with their own preferences, fears, boundaries and ways of communicating.

Being friendly, familiar or well-behaved does not mean a dog is freely available for anyone to touch.

Feeling safe is rooted in choice, in consent and the right to say no and we need to respect that.

Today Breezy, Mercy and Lenny came for a visit. Breezy and Mercy know there commands, take treats gentle and are very friendly. Lenny is a Shepard mix, very sweet, very shy. All three pups are wonder dogs. You can meet them at the Lakeshore Humane Society. They are all looking for a loving, forever home.
