On 250 acres of pasture, forest, and farmland in Marlborough, NH, keeping animals where they need to be is a full-time job, and that includes the dog whose job is protecting them.

When Camp Glen Brook moved to virtual fencing for their livestock, it solved one problem and created another:

How do you contain a livestock guardian dog once the physical fence is gone?

Their answer was Mishka, a livestock guardian dog with her own SpotOn GPS boundary, synced to overlap with the sheep's virtual paddocks as they rotate across the farm.

"We've been able now to have Mishka use her SpotOn collar and sync that up with our sheep's collars with overlapping pastures," says Farmer Sam, Camp Glen Brook's Farm Manager.

Lillian's husky, nicknamed "Hoodini," could escape almost anything, including his harness. "Every time you put him outside on his leash he would escape into the neighborhood." Years of rope burns and being dragged on walks left the family exhausted, and a physical fence was never affordable for their yard.

The award follows a year of testing, where Men's Journal editors and contributors evaluated hundreds of products across more than 20 categories, from hiking and camping to backpacking and trail running.

Field and Fetch put the Halo 5 and SpotOn head to head while camping at Island Park, testing which collar could actually keep their dog safely on-site, not just track him.

An algae warning meant they had to update their dog's fence to keep him off the shoreline, with no cell service or Wi-Fi available. SpotOn updates fences over Bluetooth, so a new boundary was set on the spot. Halo requires cell service or Wi-Fi to update a fence, neither was available at the campsite, so its fence stayed locked to the old boundary.

"The SpotOn collar is the one that gave me the versatility... the one that allowed me to adjust with a surprise circumstance, which really, that happens every time you come camping."

Their takeaway: "If you do any kind of off-grid, any kind of backwoods camping, and you want to keep your dog safe within a GPS boundary, the SpotOn collar is absolutely the way to go."
