One of the most difficult aspects of being a reactive dog guardian is the limitations placed on my dog by society.

The idea that my dog doesn't deserve freedom and safety to be a dog, simply because he's not like your dog.
Because his comfort zone looks different.
Because he has specific boundaries.

I have yet to understand how someone can honestly believe that my dog doesn't belong, just because he doesn't fit into this impossible "perfect dog" mold.

I can do everything right: the training, the management, the safety layers, seek out on-leash areas where my should be safe to enjoy, and yet, I am still hit with a wall of judgement and lack of acceptance.

"If your dog isn't friendly, you should leave him at home."
"Your dog is aggressive. You should try training him."
"Your aggressive dog shouldn't be allowed out of the house."

These accusations cut me to my core. My dog is a good dog. He may be flawed and may not be perfect, but neither am I.
I'm willing to bet money you aren't either.

His flaws don't make him any less deserving of a happy, enriched, and quality life.

You don't understand his boundaries? That's ok. You can still make an attempt to respect them.
You don't understand why he needs the space he does? I get it! I didn't understand either.
But you can still grant him that space, without fully appreciating his need.

My dog is reactive, he's not damaged. He deserves to feel safe in this world.

PSA for Dog Owners: Our Cavalier lost his life to Leukemia this past week. If you have a backyard fire pit, or bonfire, or you camp, and you have a food-focused dog, please take care to cover your fire pit when it's not in use. Copper would climb into our backyard firepit (when it was not warm or hot, etc) and look for food people may've dropped...like marshmallows. Or he'd get in and eat tomatoes from plants we pulled when the season was over. When wood burns it creates a chemical called Benzene. Benzene is a known carcinogen that can cause leukemia in humans and it is suspected to cause it in dogs as well. We didn't know this. It may not be what caused Copper's Leukemia...it may have been genetic we don't know and will never know...but it's not worth the risk. Cover your firepits when not in use (and keep their tie-outs in an area that keeps them out of reach of the firepit).
