Please call your vet sooner than later! Also make sure that id tags and microchip info is up to date.
Use the following strategies to keep your pup calm and secure:
-Create a Sound-Muffled Haven: Set up a quiet space in a windowless room (like a bathroom, walk-in closet, or an open crate draped with a heavy blanket) filled with their favorite toys and blankets.
-Mask the Noise and Light: Turn on a loud fan, play soothing classical music, or turn up the TV volume to mask the explosive sounds. Drawing your blinds or curtains also blocks out scary flashing lights.
-Offer Engaging Treats: Give your dog long-lasting enrichment toys, such as a frozen stuffed Kong or a Lickimat, to keep them mentally distracted and associate the noise with a positive reward.
-Modify Their Schedule: Avoid taking your dog outside after dusk. Schedule your potty breaks and long walks earlier in the afternoon so they aren't caught off guard by unexpected bangs. If you must take them out, always keep them securely leashed to prevent bolting.
-Try Anxiety Wraps: Vests like a ThunderShirt apply gentle, constant pressure that can help soothe and comfort anxious pets.
-Consult Your Vet for Medication: If your dog has a severe reaction to loud noises, contact your local veterinarian to discuss prescription anti-anxiety medications (such as trazodone or gabapentin) to keep them comfortable.
For dogs that panic, owners often see success by either staying with them in their safe space or finding alternative escapes. One user on Reddit found success in avoiding the stressful noise entirely by booking a pet-friendly hotel room near a major airport where sounds were muted. Always act normally and offer comfort if they seek you out, as remaining calm helps your dog feel secure.
