Almost Home: Nelson Co SPCA We are open to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. daily! Strays continue to go through the Animal Control Facility until their "stray hold" is up.

As a 501(c)3 "No-Kill" facility, our mission is to improve animal welfare by providing care and adoption of "unwanted" companion animals in Nelson County, Virginia. The Humane Society/SPCA of Nelson County (HS/SPCA) strives to improve animal welfare by providing care and adoption of "unwanted" companion animals through: our "no-kill" adoption center, foster care networks, satellite adoption venue

s, and Kitten & Puppy Rescue/Transport Programs; by funding veterinary services and education programs; and, by controlling over-population through low-cost Spay-Neuter-Vaccinate and Feral Cat Trap/Neuter/Release programs. Our goal is to extend the no-kill philosophy throughout our county, so that no healthy, non-aggressive animal is euthanized. Animals being surrendered by their owners are accepted on a space available basis, if they are judged to be adoptable. Animals are also selected from unclaimed or unwanted animals at the Nelson County Animal Control Facility after they are evaluated by the SPCA and judged to be adoptable. No animal will be put down unless it is judged to be dangerously aggressive or untreatably ill. The HS/SPCA (also known as the Almost Home Pet Adoption Center) now has several part-time employees but still relies heavily on volunteer help. Because of our efforts here at Almost Home, thousands of animals have been saved and are now living in permanent homes.

It’s been a week full of tail wags and happy goodbyes—SIX of our amazing animals found their forever homes! We’re so thrilled to see Graham, Phoenix, Frankie, Teddy, Sydney, and Sabrina off to their next adventure! 🤩

We are currently experiencing septic field issues during our peak period, which coincides with Puppy and Kitten Season. The kittens and puppies require extensive cleaning to ensure proper care. We are facing a significant expense to rectify this issue. We kindly request the community's assistance. Please visit nelsonspca.org and consider making a donation. We have included a donation QR code for your convenience. You can also support us by helping with laundry and volunteering to do kennel cleaning. Our animals express their gratitude. The two featured animals are still available for adoption.

🧸🐾 We’re Running Low! 🐾🧼

Our pups and kitties could use a little extra love—we’re in need of stuffed toys and towels! Soft toys help keep our animals comforted and entertained, and towels are a daily essential for baths, bedding, and cleanups.

If you have any gently used items to spare, we’d be so grateful! Donations can be dropped off at the shelter during open hours.

🐾 Batesminster Highlights! 🐶✨

Aurora, Phoenix, and Kaya—our adorable 7-month-old German Shepherd/Hound mix pups—strutted their stuff at the Batesminster Dog Show this weekend, and the judges weren’t the only ones swooning! 💛

It was a beautiful day spent alongside fellow animal welfare groups and so many amazing supporters. Huge thanks to Patti from Animal Connection for treating our shelter dogs to doggie gelato (yes, it was as cute as it sounds!) and even sending some home with them! 🍦🐕

We’re so grateful to Marilyn for inviting us and to George and Carol for making sure we had everything we needed—and got back to the shelter safe and sound. We love our village! 💚
