Introducing a kitten to your older cat(s) can be stressful, but with the right tools and knowledge, you can provide a Fear Free transition for everyone in the household. Things to consider are general safety for your new kitten, additional litterboxes and providing an enriched environment while the older cats get adjusted.

Bladder stones in cats can be common, and can cause serious problems--especially in male cats. These stones can form from diet, dehydration or even stress. Clinical signs can be straining to urinate, vocalization while in the litter box, lethargy, vomiting or even bloody urine. These stones can cause blockages, making urinating very difficult or even impossible for male cats and can be an emergency situation. Depending on the type of stones, these can be treated with a specialized diet, anxiety medications or even a surgery called a "cystotomy" which you can see Dr. Stewart and Brittany performing here!

Testing the urine, or even taking X-rays can help diagnose these, so staying on top of your pets health is key. Call us to schedule your cat's check up today 🐈 502-458-1161

We hope all who celebrate Easter have a fun and safe holiday 🐣🐇 Please be sure to keep in mind the hazards that can come with the Holiday:

Easter Lillies: These popular flowers can be deadly for cats!
Artificial Easter Grass: This plastic grass can lead to intestinal obstructions or get wrapped around your animal’s tongue.
Chocolate: This can be toxic to dogs! When you are hiding Easter baskets or eggs, make sure they are put somewhere your pup won’t find it first!

If you are worried your pet ingested something toxic you can call us during weekly business hours at 502-458-1161 or reach out to the Pet Poison Hotline for the weekend or after hours for immediate assistance: (855) 289-0358.

Crate Training--Whats Fear Free about that?

The benefits for crate training your puppy are multi-faceted.
This can help speed up house training, make them feel safe and reduce stress. It's important to make this transition a positive one and can help you as a pet owner! This can also help your vet or groomer reduce stress for your pet as well. Here is a link that briefly explains crate training benefits and why it's important: https://bit.ly/4coELSx

Every exam we do, we check your pet's teeth--why? Because dental health is an important part of your pets health and wellbeing! Just like humans, pets can accumulate plaque and tartar on teeth. Without regular brushing or cleaning, build-up can lead to periodontal disease-- an infection of the tissue surrounding the teeth. This can result in swollen gums, bad breath, tooth loss, discomfort and if bad enough--weight loss. The bacteria from periodontal disease can spread throughout the body and have been linked to systemic health issues in pets. These include heart disease, kidney disease, and metabolic changes that can be life-threatening if left untreated.

Happy FEAR FREE Friday! For pets, we use a FAS scale (fear, anxiety and stress) to determine the best way to provide care. Most of our staff are Fear Free Certified here at Seneca, so we are committed to making your pet's visit as stress free as possible. This includes watching your pet's body language so we can adjust our approach accordingly.

Your dog can be very open and friendly at home, but still show signs of fear or anxiety at the vet--that's okay! We understand that loud sounds or unfamiliar sights and smells can make your kiddo nervous. For some dogs, even the car ride to the vet or groomer can raise anxiety. With the help of veterinary professionals, we can devise a plan to help the transition from home to clinic less stressful. Call us at 502-458-1161 to schedule an appointment or talk options for anxiety!

Believe it or not--it's National Pet Insurance Day!
Pet insurance has been around since the 1890s when a Sweedish man named Claes Virgin wrote the first ever policy. Claes’s policy focused on horses and livestock, but it would be another 100 years before smaller animals like dogs and cats came into the pet insurance picture, and you can thank Lassie for that. Lassie was so loved both in the movie and in real life that the famous collie actually became the first dog in the United States to have insurance!

Pet Insurance can help cover those accidental snacks every puppy gets into, or when your older fur-kiddo is newly diagnosed with something that needs hefty treatments/medications. If you're interested in which companies offer insurance, call us at 502-458-1161!

It's Fear Free Friday!

We wanted to share a couple tools we use in-clinic for when your fur-kiddos stay with us! If your pet is anxious at the vet, we use these sprays with the help of medication (if needed) to help ease their anxiety. You can purchase these online as well as in a plug-in diffuser form.

If you have questions about pet anxiety signs, give us a call at 502-458-1161 to schedule an appointment 😊
