Our very first western dressage show is coming right up! We have had a few common questions I’d like to answer here:
What to wear: Clean jeans, western boots, button down shirt and a hat or helmet is fine. Chinks/wild rags/western vest welcome but not required.
Tack/turnout: Clean horses, no braids, clean working tack- no silver but if that’s all you have you can ride it! Snaffle, Curb, or Bosal-everything can be used two handed at any level and on any aged horse.
Which test should I pick? I usually recommend people ride atleast two tests, and choose from those that feel slightly below the level you are schooling. Tests can be found on the WDAA website.
I have never ridden a dressage test before what should I expect? Each test will be ridden one at a time, in a sand arena. The judge and scribe will be seated behind letter C. They will ring a bell to let you know when it’s time for you to enter the arena and begin your test. You will be judged as a rider, a horse, and the combination of horse and rider. The WDAA website will be a good resource to learn about what the judge will be looking for.
Scoring: You will be scored only against others who are riding the same test as you. Ribbons placed 1-6th. Everyone will receive their scored tests to keep, and learn from.
Most importantly this a schooling show- it’s ment to be a low key way to try out western dressage, get horses off property and have fun!
Our awesome trail system and our obstacle course will be open for use all day as well
