Equine herpes has been confirmed in our state. We are urging horse owners caution when traveling with their horses or if horses in their barns have been traveling. Several states have reported equine herpes, which have been traced to the recent eventing shows in Waco, Texas. While your horse may be vaccinated, the vaccine is less effective for the neurological form of equine herpes, which is what is currently spreading. Steps you can take as a horse owner: -update vaccines if not currently vaccinated. While the vaccine is less effective for neuro herpes, it may lessen the severity of symptoms. -Clean all tack and items used and worn around horses in between horses. Never take tack or equipment between barns that has not been cleaned and disinfected. This includes trailers and boots.
-If you have traveled recently, isolate your horse for 2-3 weeks before reintroducing them to your herd. Isolation means no shared equipment, including stall picks, halters, and buckets, and minimum 40 feet away from other horses, but further is better.
-if your horse suddenly develops neurological problems, seek veterinary care immediately. Horses can recover from neuro herpes when treated aggressively and early
-limit travel with horses during regional outbreaks

We understand this is very frightening for many people in our equine community. We can all take steps to lessen the spread of disease, and we are here if you have any questions or concerns. For specific questions or questions regarding an individual animal, please call our office at 505-865-4604
