Here’s why you SHOULDN’T buy that “no pull” harness ✋
If you know me or have worked with me you know how much I hate the harness.
The only time my dog wears a harness is for his seatbelt in the car.
Here’s a few reasons why I don’t like the harness used for every day dog life:
• they are made for pulling — the design of the harness evenly distributed the dogs weight across their chest at the strongest part of their body. Basically, if your dog isn’t a sled dog, let’s ditch the harness.
• FRUSTRATION. If your dog is pulling on the harness it is building drive and motivation to get where they want to be or what they want to get. Dogs naturally resist tension & don’t naturally receive corrections via chest pressure so there is no way to get them out of that overaroused state of mind.
• we all hear about trachea issues due to the misplacement of the prong collar, slip lead, or flat collar but we rarely talk about heath issues caused by harnesses. Here’s a few! Arthritis, inflammation, bursitis, trachea issues and shoulder damage. Unfortunately most of the time when I see puppies out they’re on a harness and I can’t help but think the potential damage it’s doing to their development.
* I want to mention I am a “if the tool works for you then use it” dog trainer — i.e., if your dog isn’t pulling, engaged with you, and respectful 👏
This post is for the owner who’s dog is reactive, pulling, obsessive, and could care less who’s at the other end of the leash.
What is your go to tool(s) for a nice walk with your dog? 🐶
