Plot twist:
Horses don’t see like humans at all.
While we focus on details, they see almost everything—wide angles, motion, and the changes in their world.
That big surprised eye?
Not shock.
Situational awareness.
Different vision. Different priorities. Same curiosity. 🐴👀

Your horse isn’t ignoring you… she’s seeing the world in 360° motion mode. 👀🐴

Unlike humans, horses have eyes on the sides of their head, giving them a nearly panoramic field of vision — they can check out almost everything around them without turning their head. That makes them excellent at spotting movement and potential danger, even before you notice it.
Iowa State University

Their color world isn’t like ours either — horses see a narrower range of colors (mostly blues and yellows) and don’t distinguish red and green the way we do.
Chevaux du Monde

So when she wide-eyed freezes, she’s not judging your Insta pose — she’s just doing what evolution built her for: scanning every direction for surprises. 😉

I have to agree. Please use extreme caution with fixed riens. Including draw riens, side riens, chambon, pessoa systems, german side riens etc.

*** PLEASE do not RIDE in side reins ***

I have sadly been told this week about one scary incident of a horse rearing up and nearly falling over whilst being ridden in side reins, and then saw a pony being hacked out in side reins about two weeks ago. This is a terrifying accident waiting to happen.

Side reins are fixed, which means if the horse panics, he/she could very easily get a front leg stuck over them, or completely flip himself over, potentially causing very serious injury to horse and rider. ESPECIALLY when out hacking, the horse needs to be able to use his head and neck to balance himself, so using fixed side reins out hacking is dangerous, and an absolute no.
Even as a very experienced rider, I wouldn’t dream of riding any of my horses in side reins. I’m not a huge draw rein fan, but they are a lot safer than side reins, in that an experienced rider can feel if the horse is going against them, or panicking, and immediately release them. I will use draw reins if needed, although never for the purpose of “schooling” or getting a horse into an outline, but I wouldn’t ever dream of riding in side reins.

I’m not completely against side reins for horses on the lunge, but they do provide a very fixed/false outline.
However, for riding in....please don’t!

Feel free to share, but not to copy my words as your own.

🐴 When The Plaid Horse asked me this question for their Trainer Tuesday Blog :
What is a trait, personality type, or skill in a rider that indicates they could be a great trainer?
This was my answer:
"A rider that is a good/great instructor would have excellent observation skills aka "a good eye" and the ability to articulate their thoughts at the level of the student. Really good timing of information and the ability to make small changes that have exponential effect. Easy to say, very hard to do! "
