Welcome to the Crew, Winnie!

Winnie is officially joining Offbeat Canine, and she came to us with plenty to talk about. She’s smart, observant, and has some big feelings about the world around her.

Our first steps are going to be slowing things down, building clearer communication, and helping Winnie learn how to settle instead of feeling like she needs to keep tabs on everything happening around her. She already has some training under her belt, so we’ll be going back through those foundations and building from there.

Excited to see this girl find her groove.

October, you were a good one.

A month full of new dogs, familiar faces, big breakthroughs, little wins, field trips, play, problem solving, and a whole lot of time spent helping dogs and their people understand each other a little better.

Some sessions were exciting. Some were quiet. Some were about learning something new, and some were about slowing down enough to figure out what the dog in front of me actually needed.

That’s the work I love.

Day Training, can be a lil like recess.

Delilah (and her fam) got some time on the spring pole installed, giving her an appropriate outlet to pull, tug, work her body, and just be a dog.

Training isn’t only obedience reps. Biological fulfillment matters, too. Giving dogs appropriate ways to do the things they naturally enjoy can be a huge piece of building a dog who can work with you AND knows where to put all that energy.

I simply couldn’t imagine putting a dog like this on an “enrichment plan” filled with slow feeders and kongs, they’d be shredded up without all the impulse control work that goes into waiting to spring up to a tug!

And apparently Sampson heard there was tug happening and needed a turn. 😂

Hunting season is underway across New England, so if you’re heading into the woods with your dog, check the regulations and posted notices for the area you’re visiting before you hit the trail.

Wear blaze orange. Put something bright and visible on your dog. Keep your dog under control, stay aware of what’s happening around you, and remember that many of the places we hike are shared spaces.

A little visibility goes a long way.

Save this for your next fall hike, and send it to the friend who always brings their dog!

🔮 The board has spoken… Gigi has some things to work on.

Meet Ouija, better known as Gigi, a one-year-old American Eskimo with a whole lot of personality and a strong commitment to making impulsive decisions first and asking questions later.

Gigi will be joining Offbeat to work on ALL the things that go into becoming a good dog: learning how to settle, think through excitement, make better choices, work with her humans, and understand that sometimes the answer is, in fact, in her owners voice.

She’s smart, she’s busy, she’s fluffy, and she’s got plenty of fun energy to harness into being a well behaved pup.

NATIONAL CAT DAY
Beans the cat is 9 years old now, and he’s been a major contributor to board and trains and raising puppies in my home.

This week was all about building the little skills that eventually become the big ones with our little soupy friend Soba.

Learning to follow leash pressure.
Checking back in with her people.
Experiencing the world without getting completely swept up in it.
Playing, exploring, training, AND learning how to settle when the fun is over.

There’s plenty of time for fancy obedience later.

Right now, Soba’s job is to learn how to exist in the world with a little more confidence, communication, and guidance each week.
