Today was one of those days that reminds us why partnerships in animal welfare matter so much.
We received multiple calls about a litter of nine 3-day-old puppies whose mother had died, this morning. Without a nursing mom, these tiny babies had very little time. They desperately needed an experienced rescue and foster placement to survive. Caldwell County ACO Sanders received the call on his day off, yet, immediately began reaching out across Texas for rescue. Rescues and shelters responded with compassion, but were already full or unable to take neonatal puppies due to the risk of exposing the litters already in their care. Even though the answer was often “we can’t,” no one stopped trying to help find another option.
When it became clear there were no local options left, CCACtx reached out to Austin Pets Alive!, APA to plea for assistance. These fragile lives had become an urgent situation, time was of the essence. Once APA stepped in, everything moved quickly. Alan, husband of CCACfoster, Maryann with Suzy met the Officer Sanders in Caldwell County, were able to transport these precious babies to the APA medical center in record time for life-saving interventions.
This is what rescue helping rescue looks like.
From Houston to San Marcos and everywhere in between, organizations answered calls, shared resources, offered ideas, and genuinely cared about the outcome the vulnerable neonates. While not every rescue had space, every conversation brought us one step closer to finding the right solution. We are incredibly grateful to Austin Pets Alive! for making room for these nine precious souls on such short notice and giving them the chance they deserve.
Animal welfare is not a competition—it’s a community. No single organization can do this work alone. When shelters, rescues, animal control officers, fosters, volunteers, and advocates come together, lives are saved that otherwise might be lost.
