A kind client brought us an injured hummingbird they have been caring for and attempting to rehabilitate. Dr. McCarthy and Dr. Barnett examined the tiny patient and have been reaching out to wildlife rehabilitation organizations to see if additional specialized care is available.

We’re still working to determine whether the hummingbird has an injured wing, but in the meantime, we were fascinated to watch this amazing little creature eat. If you look closely at the video, you can even see its tiny tongue in action!

Hummingbirds are incredible animals, and it’s always a privilege to help wildlife when we can. Thank you to the compassionate people who go the extra mile to care for animals in need. ❤️

He’s one of many gorgeous kitties available for adoption at Little Rock Animal Village.
He’s 2 years old and good with kids. Of course, he’s litter box trained, and he’s neutral with dogs. He can take them or leave them 🤷🏻‍♀️

Garfield will be neutered, microchipped, and given all his shots for just a $90 adoption fee!

Snowy is a master snuggler. He’s the sweetest angel boy who seems to be potty trained, loves to run around and explore a bit, and then he’s all snuggles.
He’s a Sharpei/pit bull mix who was found abandoned in a kennel when his former owners moved away!
He loves other dogs and wants to be everyone’s friend.
He has a rescue commitment with CARE but he needs a foster. CARE will provide everything he needs until his new family can be found.

Some stories come full circle. ❤️

About a year ago, one of our very favorite clients said goodbye to his very special dog, Otto. Otto was deeply loved by both his family and our team. Today, we had the joy of meeting the newest addition to his family—a handsome boy whose name is still pending while they get to know each other.

Something tells us this pup and Doc are going to be the very best of friends.

Hey CAC family, you’ve probably seen some headlines about New World screwworm lately, so I wanted to share a quick, practical update.

First, don’t panic. We are NOT yet seeing widespread cases in our area. However, this is a parasite that veterinarians are paying close attention to because it can affect warm-blooded animals, including dogs and cats.

Unlike typical maggots (gross, I know)that feed on dead tissue, New World screwworm larvae can invade living tissue, causing painful wounds that can become serious very quickly.

This is especially worth talking about right now because we’re entering what many of us in the vet med world call “hot spot season.” The combination of heat, humidity, allergies, and fleas means we’re seeing more acute moist dermatitis (hot spots), and those moist, irritated skin lesions are exactly the kind of wounds that should be addressed promptly.

The good news? There are things pet owners can do right now:

✅ Keep your pets on their recommended parasite preventatives.

✅ Stay on top of flea control and treat hot spots early before they become large, open skin lesions.

✅ Check pets regularly for wounds, especially after hunting, hiking, boarding, or outdoor adventures.

✅ Seek veterinary care promptly for any wound that isn’t healing normally or seems unusually painful.

✅ If you’re planning to travel internationally with your pet, especially to or through Mexico, make sure you understand the current import and export requirements before you go. (I believe it’s currently closed for export and import, but this is an evolving situation).

At Cantrell Animal Clinic, we carry Credelio and Credelio Quattro (which have been approved to treat Scew Worm infestations), and we’re happy to discuss which parasite prevention plan is best for your pet.

This isn’t a reason to be alarmed, but it is a good reminder that staying up-to-date on preventatives, controlling fleas, and treating wounds early can make a big difference.

Monty is a 4-year-old Shih Tzu who has completely stolen our hearts. He isn't just a patient—he's family. Every visit comes with a special greeting, because Monty has a signature move: his adorable little wave!

The best part? He doesn't just wave randomly. He gets excited to see each member of our team. Between his enthusiastic greetings, endless conversations (he always has something important to say!), and his sweet personality, Monty just makes our days better.

Some patients come to the clinic for treatment. Monty comes to boost morale. ❤️
