This Memorial Monday tribute is for Stella 🤍

“She held on long enough to get me through a tough year, including staying by my side during breast cancer diagnosis and the worst of the treatment. Finally, with me healing, it was time for her to let go. I miss her. I will always love her. She was zany, loyal, needy, and generous - all at the same time. My Goodest Girl.”

Knowing when it’s time to say goodbye to your pet is one of the most challenging and emotional decisions you will make. The reality is that it will likely never feel like the “right choice”, but it’s important to remember that if your pet is suffering, saying goodbye is a selfless act of love 🤍

So how do we know when it’s time?

It will look different for every pet, but here are a few things you can do to gain a better understanding of their wellbeing:

1) Track their good days and bad days on a calendar. Does one seem to outweigh the other?

2) Track their activities, which can be done on the same calendar. Are they participating in and enjoying their favorite activities? Are some days better than others?

3) Check in with your vet. They will be able to evaluate your pets physical health to help you better understand how they’re feeling physically.

Ultimately, you know your pet better than anyone else. You spend the most time with them, and you’re likely to tune in first when something is off. Trust your instincts and check in with your vet. You are their best advocate in ensuring their last days are full of comfort and love 🤍

PSA: The porcupines are out and about!
Here are the main things we wish everyone knew about Porcupines.

If you are here to leaf peep: we have porcupines in Maine!
Porcupines will not run away from your dog!
They are most active at dawn and dusk.
They do not care about fences and will climb over them!
Check for porcupines in your yard before going for that last walk before bed time.
Do not cut the quills! This makes it HARDER to remove!
Quills have barbs so they will keep migrating in the direction they are stuck.
Quills in the abdomen or chest are emergencies.
Dogs will not "learn" so do not assume that they won't go after another porcupine.
Sedation is likely required to remove quills in most pets.

We learned a lot and can’t wait to put it to use!

For each pet seen at Farewell My Friend, we create a custom love rock, to be placed on the property, honoring the spirit of your pet.

This tradition began with Toby. When our friend Toby passed, Sara Moore, an animal communicator from Enlightened Horizons guided us in creating a meaningful tribute. Toby requested that “LOVE “ be written on one side of a rock, his name on the other side, and that it be placed in his favorite spots. He asked for this tradition to be continued as a way to remember our own beloved pets.

We are so grateful to everyone who has entrusted us with their goodbyes so far this year. These love rocks belong to the pets we said goodbye to in the third quarter of the year, their spirits will be honored here for many years to come 🤍
