A few months after my dog died, one of my best friends asked me, "What was the best thing about loving your dog?" I lit a cigarette I didn't plan to finish and stared at the leash still hanging by the door. "It's how they make you feel alive." I said.

Not in the dramatic, overblown way people like to talk about. No fireworks, no revelations. Just the small things. The sound of their paws trailing behind you, the way they press into your side when the world feels like too much. They don't ask for too much. They don't complain or hurt you in the ways people do. They just show up, every damn day, and remind you that even in the chaos of it all, you're needed. You're important. You're enough.

And when they're gone, that's when you really get it. The house feels too big. The air feels too still. But you wouldn't trade it. Not a second of it. Because for a while, they gave you something you didn't even know you were looking for a reason to stay grounded. To keep going. To keep searching for more.

That's the best thing. They make the world bearable in the little time you share together. They make everything feel... a little less cold. And I'm still grateful for that.

The rainbow bridge poem is a beautiful interpretation of the love we carry for our pets, long after they’ve left our world.

“Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....”

We’re pleased to introduce The Olive Fund, created because every pet owner deserves the opportunity to honor a life well loved 🤍

The Olive Fund is a reserve set aside for clients who are in need of end of life care for their pets, and need extra support to cover the associated costs. The full amount of every donation stays in the fund until an owner in need utilizes the service.

We know how special your pets are and how hard it is to say goodbye. This fund allows us to help more owners have meaningful goodbyes with their beloved pets 🤍

To make a contribution, or to reach out for support, visit our website at www.fmfmaine.com/about-us-1
