Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease spread through the urine of infected wildlife such as raccoons, skunks, oppossums, squirrels, deer, rodents and other wild animals.
The bacteria can survive in puddles, standing water, damp grass and soil, even in your own backyard. That means dogs can become infected simply by sniffing, drinking from, or walking through contaminated areas.
Because exposure is so common, many veterinarians now recommend the Leptospirosis vaccine as a core part of protecting most dogs, not just those that hike, hunt, or live in rural areas.
