If you’ve ever trained with me, you’ve probably noticed I don’t get caught up in having the newest gear.

I like things that work.

The leashes I’ve been using for years. The treat pouch that’s been thrown in the back of my SUV more times than I can count. The long line that’s been dragged through the woods with more dogs than I could ever remember.

People ask about them all the time, so I finally put together a list of the things I actually reach for every week. Nothing fancy just the things I’ve grown to trust after spending a lot of time outside with dogs.

The full list is linked in our bio.

I think one of the hardest parts about booking a board & train is saying goodbye.
Not because dogs don’t adapt they usually do better than we give them credit for.
It’s because you love them. It’s hard not to wonder what they’re thinking while you’re apart.

Then pickup day comes.

They hear your voice, they catch your scent, and suddenly they’re right back where they belong.

I get to watch those reunions all the time, and they never get old.

I wish more people knew that part of board & train. It’s the best.

People come to us for behavior problems. Pulling, reactivity, not listening.
But most of what we're actually building isn't obedience. It's trust.

This is what it looks like when that's working. Not a dog performing a command. Just a dog who feels safe enough to be still, right up against the person who earned it.

Training gets you a dog who listens. Trust gets you this.

Want your dog to actually want to listen, not just comply? Try this.

Pick something that usually falls apart under distraction. Keep their favorite game out of sight until they hold it together. Then bring the game to life right there, not a treat, not praise a few seconds later.

Do that enough and your dog learns something bigger than the command. The hard moments are where the best stuff happens with you. That's what gets them checking in on their own instead of needing to be told.

A lot of rescue dogs come with a story nobody wrote down.

No history. No idea what happened before. Just a dog who flinches at raised hands, or won't walk past a certain kind of car, or shuts down the second a leash comes out.
We don't need the backstory to help them. We just need to show them, over and over, that this time is different.

That's most of what rescue work actually looks like. Not one big breakthrough moment. Just a hundred small ones, stacked on top of each other, until the dog finally believes it.

Second chances aren't a slogan around here. They're most of the job.

Meet McKenzie.

McKenzie has a way of making dogs feel like they belong.

Whether it’s a young dog still figuring life out, a rescue learning to trust, or a dog that just needs a little more confidence, she’s patient enough to meet them where they are.

She loves watching the moment everything starts to click not because a dog learned a command, but because they begin making better choices on their own.

If you’re looking for someone who genuinely enjoys helping dogs grow into themselves, she’s your person.

Play isn't a break from training. It's part of it.

When your dog tugs with you, chases you, works for that ball, they're learning something bigger than the game. That you're the best part of their day. That engaging with you beats bolting after a squirrel or sniffing the fence line.

We use tug, fetch, and personal play on purpose. Motivation built through play carries straight into real obedience. A dog who wants to work with you will always outperform a dog who's forced to.

So next time you're playing, know you're building the relationship everything else stands on.

Most training stops too soon. We don't.
The Puppy-to-Adult Program is built in two stages, matched to how your dog actually develops.

Stage 1: The Foundation, for puppies 8 weeks to 6 months.

Stage 2: The Lead, for dogs 10 to 12 months, once they're ready for real off leash freedom.

Two stages. One dog who understands, not just obeys.

Spots are limited each month. Link in bio to schedule your evaluation call.

Summer doesn't test what your dog knows. It tests what you actually built.

More people at the trailhead. More dogs at the lake. More food hitting the ground at every cookout. More reasons to blow you off.

This is where training either holds up or it doesn't.

If your dog is struggling a little more right now... that's not a setback. That's information. The environment got harder. The reps you put in over the winter are getting tested for real.

So take it back to basics for a session or two. Manage the distraction. Set them up to win again. Then build back up.

Training for real life means training in real life. Summer's just handing you the hardest version of it.

I had a client last week say something that stuck with me.
"I didn't realize how much I was avoiding the park because of him."

Not because her dog was aggressive. Just reactive enough, pully enough, unpredictable enough that summer evenings at the park stopped being worth the stress.

That's the part people don't talk about enough. Training isn't just about the dog's behavior. It's about giving you your life back.

This week she walked him through a packed park on a loose leash. Dogs running past. Kids on scooters. He checked in with her instead of losing his mind.

She didn't say much. Just smiled the whole walk back to the car.

That's the job. Not perfect obedience. Just a dog you can actually take places again.
