For National Dog Day, I want to talk about sweet Harold.
I pulled him from a shelter 8 months ago. He was found by a dumpster and he was microchipped. They called the owner and got hung up on three times.
He was 17 yrs old, barely could see, deaf, kidney disease, bad teeth and bad arthritis. I could not leave him there. He came to Apl. I was going to find him a foster but he stayed. With his kidney disease, he would just p*e whenever, which was fine, we just mopped it up. Also, we could keep an eye on him in case his health declined. The vet did not think he would be around long but he was doing good for an old boy. He loved his food! We knew he would let us know when it was time. That time came about a week ago.
We were there for the 8 months giving him love, that he so deserved. We always enjoyed coming to work and seeing him. He had the whole office area, grooming area, break room, and at times the screened in porch. A funny little story.....I had a treat on my palm holding it out and he engulfed my 4 fingers and clamped down. I had to gently lift his mouth to let go, he loved food so much. He might have not been able to see well but he had a great nose!
Run free sweet Harold. You put an imprint on our hearts!
We were there when he went to sleep, petting him the whole time and talking to him, even though he couldn't hear us.
To his owner, I don't know the situation as to why he was found lost, but he was very much loved in the 8 months he was with us and we were there when it was time to say goodbye, he was not alone.
To everyone else, please do not abandon pets, they trust us and just want to be part of a family. I am seeing more seniors being dumped on the streets and ending up in shelters. It is truly heartbreaking when they have known a home and family their whole life and then they are left somewhere unknown. They are confused, traumatized, and lost when all they want is their family and do not know what's going on. There needs to be more compassion as we would not want that to happen to us.
Please save a life and adopt today. There are so many dogs and cats that need homes at shelters and rescues.
Please visit our website at www.aplsc.org to add a new family member. If you cannot adopt, you can donate. It helps to keep care of all our pets until they find homes, and please share.
