Today we're celebrating the people and organizations who believe that animals and communities are worth showing up for.

A special thank you to P.A.W.S. (Pauls Valley Animal Welfare Society), Heartprints Animal Rescue, Lupa Legacy Animal Rescue, and Purcell Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) for being wonderful partners and supporters of LAWS and Lexington.

I also want to thank our very own LAWS members for persevering through some very frustrating issues. Thanks for hanging in there.

Animal welfare is a team effort. We're grateful to be part of this one. 🐾

🐾 LAWS EXPLAINED – PART 4 🐾

THE FINANCIAL REALITY

In Parts 1–3, we’ve explained who LAWS is, what happened that urged the members of LAWS to get involved, and why the City or LAWS can’t currently take in stray animals.

Now we need to talk about the biggest challenge facing animal welfare in Lexington:

FUNDING.

There is an enormous need in our community for:

🐾 A safe, humane shelter
🐾 Spay/neuter resources
🐾 TNR programs
🐾 Medical care and basic animal needs
🐾 Low or No cost chipping events
🐾 Pet Food Pantry

But right now, the resources simply aren’t there.

Last fall when new city leadership began examining Lexington’s finance situation, the reality became clear: the City is facing significant financial challenges. That means there simply isn’t money available to immediately fund the animal welfare programs our community needs.

LAWS also has very limited funds. We are very new volunteer 501(c)(3), and our ability to help depends on donations, grants, partnerships, and community support.

So what are we doing?

We’re looking for solutions.

🐾 Actively applying for grants
🐾 Seeking donations and in-kind support
🐾 Building partnerships with rescues and other communities
🐾 Working with the City to pursue funding opportunities
🐾 Looking toward a new, safe shelter that doesn’t have to cost millions

We are encouraged by new city leadership, both council and management, that is willing to listen, collaborate, and look for solutions. Incredibly grateful to see everyone working together.

Our goal isn’t to create temporary fixes.
It’s to build sustainable solutions for Lexington’s animals and our community.

Can you believe it? LAWS has officially been on Facebook for ONE YEAR! 🎂🐶🐱

What started as a way to share information, build awareness, and connect our community has grown into something so much bigger—and YOU are a huge part of that.

To everyone who has followed our page, shared a post, liked a photo, commented, donated, volunteered, fostered, offered encouragement, or simply stopped by to see what we’re doing… THANK YOU! ❤️

Every share helps spread the word. Every new follower helps us reach another person. Every bit of support reminds us that there are people who care deeply about the animals and the future of Lexington.

This past year has been a journey, and we’re just getting started! 🐾

We have more projects, events, partnerships and exciting updates coming, so keep following along. We can’t wait to show you what’s next!

A Helping Hand From Our Neighbors! 🐾❤️

Last night, the Lexington City Council approved a generous donation from the City of Pauls Valley Animal Welfare a stationary microchip reader and a mobile microchip reader to the City of Lexington, Ok and Lexington Animal Welfare Society-LAWS. This is so much more than a piece of equipment. It’s another example of surrounding communities stepping up to help Lexington—and we are incredibly grateful. Communities helping communities is what makes a difference. ❤️

A special thank-you to Christopher Hurley P.A.W.S. (Pauls Valley Animal Welfare Society) a tremendous supporter—not just of Lexington, but of communities throughout our area. Your willingness to share resources, knowledge and support means more than you know!

🐾 And this is just the beginning!

Be sure to follow the LAWS page and check back often for upcoming information about where and when the stationary microchip reader will be installed and available for community use.

We also have more events, projects and opportunities coming in the future, so stay tuned! There’s a lot happening as we continue working toward better animal welfare and stronger community partnerships.

We have recently become aware of unauthorized merchandise being advertised using the LAWS name and logo.

LAWS has NOT approved or authorized the sale of any merchandise at this time.

If you see LAWS merchandise that is not posted on our official page as a headliner, it has not been approved by LAWS. We cannot verify where the proceeds are going or who is behind these sales. See attached screenshots.

🐾 LAWS EXPLAINED – PART 3 🐾

Why Can’t LAWS Take My Stray?

This is the question we receive more than any other.

And it’s a fair question.

When you find a stray dog, your first instinct is to help. Ours is too.

Unfortunately, many people believe LAWS is a rescue organization with a shelter full of empty kennels waiting for animals.

The reality is very different.

Here’s what many people don’t realize…

🐾 LAWS is not a rescue organization.

🐾 LAWS does not own or operate the City of Lexington Animal Shelter.

🐾 LAWS does not have a building where we can house animals.

🐾 Every foster home we have is currently full, some dogs requiring future medical care.

Why is the shelter closed?

The current shelter building is simply not suitable for housing animals. It is an old storage building for wastewater chemicals.

Rather than to continue placing dogs in an environment that does not meet the standard they deserve, the difficult decision was made to keep the shelter closed until better long-term solutions can be developed.

We know this is frustrating.

It’s frustrating for us, too.

So what is LAWS doing?

Even though we cannot accept every stray that is found, we continue working to improve animal welfare in Lexington by:

✅ Applying for grants

✅ Raising funds

✅ Building partnerships with rescues

✅ Advocating for responsible, humane practices

✅ Supporting the City of Lexington in pursuing long-term solutions

Our goal has never been to simply manage today’s problem.

Our goal is to help create a future where Lexington has the resources, partnerships, and facilities needed to better serve both animals and our community.

We know there is still much work to do.

🐾 LEXINGTON — WE NEED FOSTERS! 🐾

Heartprints Animal Rescue (HAR) has been an incredible supporter of LAWS and the Lexington community, helping with TNR and finding homes for many of our stray and community cats.

Our cat colonies are a massive challenge, and while LAWS works toward long-term solutions and the funding needed to make them possible, HAR is stepping up right now to help. ❤️

But they need foster homes.

🏡 You don’t have to be an experienced rescuer. You simply need to be willing to open your home temporarily to a cat or kitten while they wait for their forever family.

A foster home can mean the difference between a cat being helped and having nowhere to go.

If you can foster — even for a short time — please consider stepping up.
