🎃🐶 BEFORE YOUR DOG PUTS ON THEIR HALLOWEEN COSTUME… 👻

Getting your pup ready for Halloween? A little grooming prep can help keep them looking good and feeling comfortable!

🪮 BRUSH THEM OUT FIRST
Start with a clean, thoroughly brushed coat before putting on their costume. You want to make sure there are no tangles hiding underneath.

🎭 TRY THE COSTUME ON EARLY
Don't wait until Halloween night! Let your dog wear it for short periods beforehand so you can see how they react and make sure they're comfortable moving around in it.

🐾 WATCH THEIR BODY LANGUAGE
If your dog seems uncomfortable, stressed, or really doesn't like wearing it, skip the costume! They don't need an outfit to be adorable. ❤️

🪮 BRUSH THEM AGAIN AFTER
This one is important! Friction from clothing rubbing against the coat can contribute to tangling and matting, especially in longer or curly coats. Give them a good, thorough brush after the costume comes off.

📸 AND HAVE FUN!
Take the pictures. Get the cute Halloween photo. Let them be the little pumpkin, ghost, superhero, or whatever else you dreamed up. 🎃👻

Just remember: costume on, fun time. Costume off, brush time! 😂🐶

When you bring your dog to Paw Barn, you're not simply dropping off an animal for a haircut.

🎃👻 HALLOWEEN SAFETY FOR YOUR DOG 👻🎃

Halloween is fun for us… but all the costumes, candy, decorations, doorbells, and strange people can be a LOT for our dogs. 😅

A few simple reminders to help keep your pup safe:

🍫 CANDY:
Keep chocolate and sugar-free candy containing xylitol far away from curious noses.

🎭 COSTUMES:
If your dog doesn't like wearing one, don't force it. Comfort comes first!

🕯️ DECORATIONS:
Keep candles, cords, small decorations, and tempting chewable items out of reach.

🚪 THE FRONT DOOR:
Repeatedly opening the door creates an easy escape opportunity. Keep an eye on those pups!

🔔 DOORBELL STRESS:
If the constant ringing is too much, give your dog a quiet, comfortable space away from the activity.

🏠 SAFE SPACE:
Set up a cozy room or area where your dog can retreat when they need a break.

🪪 ID CHECK:
Make sure their collar, tags, and microchip information are current—just in case.

🐾 WATCH THEIR BODY LANGUAGE:
Not every dog enjoys Halloween. If they're hiding, pacing, panting, trembling, or trying to get away, they're telling you they need some space.

Halloween should be fun for everyone—including the dogs. ❤️

Know your dog, watch their stress signals, and let them celebrate (or skip the celebration!) on their terms.

Compacted Coats!

German Shepherds are known for their beautiful, thick double coats. But all that fur comes with a little extra responsibility!

One thing we watch for during grooming is coat compaction. This happens when loose undercoat gets trapped and packed tightly against the skin instead of being brushed or blown out.

So, why is that a problem?

🐾 Trapped moisture and debris: A compacted coat can hold moisture, dirt, and debris close to the skin, creating an environment where bacteria can thrive.

🐾 Skin irritation: When the coat is packed down, airflow and proper drying become more difficult, which can contribute to irritation and discomfort.

🐾 Hidden skin problems: Hot spots, sores, and conditions such as rain rot can develop or go unnoticed beneath a thick coat. A compacted coat can make it harder to spot trouble before it gets worse.

Regular brushing, proper bathing, and thoroughly drying that thick undercoat are important parts of keeping your Shepherd comfortable and their skin healthy. And remember, shaving a double coat isn't usually the answer! The goal is to remove loose undercoat and keep the coat in good condition.

❤️ At Paw Barn, grooming is about more than getting rid of loose hair. It's also an opportunity to check the skin, notice changes, and help keep your best friend feeling their best.

What started with a concrete-filled plastic weight set from Kmart as a kid turned into a lifelong passion for weightlifting! 💪 From high school into adulthood, Greg has gone on to set multiple state and national powerlifting records. After working out at the SweatShop for years with his son, Kyston, the opportunity came to buy it from the previous owners, who wanted someone who would care for it just as they had. And since owning a gym had always been Greg’s dream, it was a perfect fit! Greg’s passion has truly come full circle! ❤️

🔧 Dat Muffler Shop

Owned by husband-and-wife team James and Ashley, Dat Muffler Shop has been serving our community since 2016! Ashley comes from a multigenerational family of mechanics, while James discovered his own knack and passion for the trade when the two went to help her father at his business. ❤️

🐾 MEET THE TEAM: LAVERNE 🐾

If you ask LaVerne, she's always gotten along better with animals than she does with people.

Honestly... we're not saying she's wrong 😂🐶

From an early age, she started training her own pets at home and learning how to communicate with them. Eventually, people started noticing her knack for understanding animals and began bringing their own pets to her for training.

Her love for animals really showed itself when her dad brought home a dog while LaVerne was a teenager. The dog was supposed to be *his* dog, but as these things go, somehow the responsibility naturally fell to LaVerne. She fed her, cleaned up after her, trained her, and even sang her to sleep. When LaVerne’s sister eventually asked their dad if she could do something with the dog, he simply looked at LaVerne and said:

“Ask LaVerne. That’s her dog.” 😂

In high school, LaVerne started exploring different career paths, trying everything from woodworking to working at a plant nursery. Then her godparents took her to a grooming shop one day to apply for a job.

The moment she walked in and looked around, she knew: this was what she wanted to do. ✂️🐶

Since then, LaVerne has worked with all kinds of dogs in several different salons. And somehow, along the way, she always seems to find her way back here, working alongside Skye.

She's worked with the big old dogs whose hips aren't what they used to be. She's worked with the little scared dogs who would very much like to discuss your grooming techniques with their teeth. 😅

And all of those experiences have taught her something really important:

Every dog has different needs when it comes to feeling safe and comfortable.

As LaVerne puts it:

“Big old dogs with rotten hips and small scared dogs that like to bite. All these things have given me the opportunity to learn what a dog needs to feel comfortable being groomed.”

And THAT is exactly the kind of experience we value at Paw Barn.

Because sometimes grooming isn't about getting the perfect groom as quickly as possible. Sometimes it's about slowing down, paying attention, earning trust, and figuring out what this particular dog needs.

LaVerne has a pretty good track record of understanding animals.

People? Well… we're still working on that. 😂

But we're awfully glad she's part of the Paw Barn team. ❤️🐾
