Help us build a new playpen for our shelter dogs!

The sweet girl pictured is Gypsy, enjoying some time in our current playpen. Moments like this are so important for our dogs, but with our shelter almost always full, there simply aren't enough hours in the day for every dog to get the outdoor time they need.

Our current playpen needs repairs and updating, and having only one playpen makes it difficult to get every dog outside as often as we’d like.

That’s why we’re raising $3,000 to build a second playpen.

A second playpen means more dogs getting out to run, play, sniff, stretch their legs, burn off some of that kennel energy, and simply enjoy being dogs. For animals who may spend weeks or even months waiting for their forever families, those moments of freedom mean so much.

We’re asking our community to help us make this possible. Every donation, no matter the amount, gets us closer to giving our dogs more time outside and a better quality of life while they wait for their homes.

To donate:

PayPal: Frances Hensley Animal Shelter

Venmo:

You can also donate through our wonderful board member and organizer, Crystel:

Venmo: -carnel

Please specify that your contribution is for the shelter playpen.

If you can’t donate, sharing this post helps more than you know.

These dogs deserve more than a kennel. They deserve the chance to run, play, and just be dogs. Help us give them that.

FOUR HAPPY TAILS THIS WEEK!

We’ve had an extra special week at the shelter because THREE cats and one dog found their forever homes!

-Cardinal Flower
-Summit
-Zelda
-Tini

And we have to give an especially big shoutout to our senior guy, Summit. After waiting far too long for his person to come along, Summit finally busted out of this place and headed HOME with his new family! Yay!!

There is nothing better than watching our shelter animals walk out the door knowing they’re going somewhere they’ll be loved, spoiled, and cherished.

Four lives changed. Four families made a little happier. And four animals headed home.

Thank you to everyone who shares our posts, volunteers, fosters, donates, and helps our animals get seen. You are part of every single one of these happy endings.

Now, who’s next?

Not sure if a dog is the right fit for your home? Try before you commit.

Our Foster-to-Adopt option gives approved adopters the opportunity to take a dog home for a few days and see how things go in a real home environment.

Sometimes, a dog’s personality at the shelter is very different from what you see once they’re home. Foster-to-Adopt gives you the chance to learn their routines, quirks, energy level, likes and dislikes, and how they fit into your household before making the final commitment.

And if it turns out that the match isn’t quite right? That’s okay. The dog still got a break from shelter life, got to experience a home, and we gained valuable information that can help us find the right forever family for them.

It’s similar to our Day Out Program, but with one important difference: the goal is for this dog to go from your home to their forever home.

There is no cost to participate in Foster-to-Adopt. If you decide that the dog is the perfect fit and you’re ready to make it official, we’ll complete the adoption and the adoption fee is paid at that time.

Sometimes the best way to know if you’re the right match is simply to spend some time together.

If you’re interested in Foster-to-Adopt, come see us and talk with our staff about the process.

Kaydence needs a volunteer.

Okay, maybe he doesn’t need one specific volunteer… but look at that face. You’re telling me you don’t want to come hang out with him?

We’d love to have more people come out to the shelter and volunteer with us. You don’t need special experience, and you don’t have to commit to a huge amount of time. Sometimes the most important thing you can give a shelter animal is simply your time and attention.

Come spend some time with the dogs. Take them outside. Give them some enrichment. Sit with them. Help us keep their kennels clean. Give them a little extra love on a day when shelter life feels especially long.

And yes, Kaydence would probably be more than happy to personally supervise your volunteer orientation.

If you’ve ever thought, “I’d love to help at the shelter,” this is your sign.

Come see us at:

Shelter hours:
Tuesday–Friday: 11 AM–5 PM
Saturday: 11 AM–3 PM
Sunday & Monday: CLOSED

Come meet the animals, see what we do, and find out where you can help. We’d love to have you!

Summit has a very important message.... we need cat litter!

We are desperately in need of NON-CLUMPING cat litter at the shelter.

Cat litter is one of those things we go through incredibly quickly. With the number of cats and kittens in our care, we can never seem to keep enough of it in the building. It’s also one of the few supplies we consistently have to purchase ourselves because donations simply don’t keep up with how much we use.

So while Summit is busy being our Pet of the Week, he would like to remind everyone that his fellow feline residents have a very practical need: LITTER. Lots and lots of litter.

If you’re able to donate, we are specifically looking for NON-CLUMPING cat litter.

You can:

-Drop litter off directly at the shelter
-Purchase litter and have it donated to us
-Make a monetary donation directly to the shelter or send a donation to our Venmo () or our Paypal!

Every bag helps, and every donation means one less essential expense we have to pull from funds that could otherwise go toward the animals’ medical care and other needs.

We go through it fast. Really fast. If you’ve ever wondered what one of our biggest ongoing supply struggles is, this is it.

Help Summit keep the litter boxes full.

Meet Summit, a 10-year-old cat who has been patiently waiting at the shelter for his forever home for months. As a senior animal, Summit is often overlooked by people searching for a new pet. Puppies and kittens naturally attract a lot of attention, but senior animals have just as much love to give. They deserve the opportunity to spend their golden years in a loving home.

One of the greatest things about adopting a senior pet is that you already know who they are. Their personalities are established, and they have grown past the energetic puppy and kitten stages. Senior pets can make wonderful companions for someone looking for a calmer, loving addition to their family. For Summit, months in the shelter have meant watching other cats find their homes while he continues to wait. At 10 years old, he shouldn’t have to spend his golden years waiting for someone to choose him.

Senior animals are often some of the most deserving pets in a shelter. They have so much life and love left to give, and adoption can make an incredible difference in their remaining years. If you have room in your heart and home for a senior companion, consider giving Summit a chance. His age isn’t a reason to pass him by. it’s a reason to give him the loving home he deserves.

What if you could give a shelter dog a little break from kennel life even if you can’t adopt right now?

Our Day Out Program lets you take one of our dogs out for the day and give them a chance to experience something different. A car ride, a walk, a pup cup, some time at home, or just getting to relax somewhere other than the shelter can make a huge difference.

It’s enrichment, it’s fun, and it gives them something they desperately need: a break.

But there’s another really important part of Day Out: we learn more about them.

When a dog gets out of the shelter environment, we get to see their personality come through. We learn what they love, what they’re unsure about, how they behave in different environments, what makes them happy, and all those little quirks you just can’t see from a kennel.

And sometimes, a Day Out is exactly what helps someone fall in love with a dog they might have otherwise overlooked.

You don’t have to be looking to adopt. You just have to be willing to give a dog a few hours of your day.

Take a shelter dog on a Day Out. You get some four-legged company. They get a break from the shelter. And we get to know them a little better.

It’s a pretty great way to spend a day
