St. Mary's Animal Welfare League SMAWL rescues and adopts homeless animals, issues spay and neuter vouchers to the public, and promot St. Mary’s county and the surrounding areas.

Mary’s Animal Welfare League (SMAWL) is a nonprofit organization based in southern Maryland, about an hour outside of Washington, D.C. SMAWL is dedicated to the rescue, care, and placement of abused, neglected, and homeless companion animals in St. Originally founded in 1990 by four volunteers, SMAWL continues to operate under the heartfelt dedication of volunteers and a governing Board of Direct

In response to growing community need, SMAWL has expanded its mission beyond animal rescue to include animal welfare, community education and legislative advocacy as part of its services, giving the animals of St. Mary’s County the voice they so desperately need. Currently, the organization relies upon volunteer foster families to shelter adoptable animals, with long-term plans of opening a permanent shelter and headquarters to better serve the community.

⚠️ Thank You for Your Understanding ⚠️

We sincerely apologize to everyone who was unable to receive vaccines at tonight's SMAWL Low-Cost Vaccine Clinic.

Unfortunately, due to lightning in the area, we had to end the clinic early. Because our clinic is held entirely outdoors, it was simply not safe to continue. The safety of our volunteers, our patrons, and the animals in our care must always come first.

We know many of you waited patiently, and we're truly sorry for the inconvenience this caused. We especially want to thank everyone who was so understanding and supportive of our decision. Your kindness, patience, and concern for the safety of our volunteers, fellow pet owners, and the animals meant so much to us.

Our next SMAWL Low-Cost Vaccine Clinic will be held on Monday, September 14th, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. We hope to see you there and appreciate your continued support as we work to provide affordable veterinary care to our community.
