We got a chance to pet sot this amazing boy Finley! Finley has quite a few bites on people and his owners were very worried about how pet sitting would go. We went very slowly and worked a ton with him and by the first three hours he was cuddling with us on the couch!
If you want to book pet sitting with us please check our website!

⭐ Understanding and respecting a dog's body language is important for pet parents and pet professionals alike.

Dog body language is a method of communication.

What do we mean by "notice and reinforce"?
▶ Once a dog's body shifts from happy, loose, wiggly, or relaxed to them yawning, turning away, moving away, etc, SLOW down or PAUSE.
▶ Evaluate: What is happening in this situation? What can we change about what we're doing to improve how they feel?
▶ Act: Stop what you're doing, try a different approach, or try again later.

When we actively respond to these minor signs of stress or discomfort, it can be reinforcing to the dog because we listened.
Missing or ignoring signs of stress can lead to the escalation of behaviors a dog may perform to get us to stop. "If this didn't work, what about THIS?"

❓ Have you ever heard someone say, "They just snapped, out of nowhere!"
In many cases, this can mean that the dog attempted to communicate discomfort and was ignored, or they have a prior learning history of being ignored or punished for communicating that they are uncomfortable.

We love e-collar here at Trifecta, but we also want to make sure it’s understood! We see tons of misconceptions about e-collar and we want to help provide context and education to help people decide if it would be right for them! We do use e-collar for our training but it is optional (unless you want to do off- leash reliability). It is not a tool for everyone but sometimes people really just don’t understand how it works.

Client of the week is Afina!!
This is our second time pet sitting for her and she has genuinely given us so much more trust!
Afina is very anxious about her space and does not trust people especially if she doesn’t think you will respect her space! Her owners have put in so much work with her and we are so happy they trust us with their dogter! While it’s not always 100% perfect with Afina she has shown so much more patience over the time we have known her and is really starting to warm up when we come in and kind of switch up her routine!

✨🐾 Learning never stops. 🐾✨

This past weekend, the Trifecta Team had the opportunity to attend “The Dog Training Workshop”with Jay Jack, Larry Krohn, and Joel Silverman, three trainers who each approach dog training from very different perspectives. Jay, known for his play-based training to build confidence and work with very gamey pitties. Larry, “the e-collar guy.” And Joel, training dogs for movie sets, doing trick training, taking a very positive reinforcement approach. The format, very uniquely, presents 3 different theories and methods of training dogs, all in one workshop, with the same dogs.

We truly believe learning never stops, that you should never stop being students. That’s what we love about workshops! One of the biggest takeaways from the weekend wasn’t that we found a “better” way to train. It was the value of seeing different viewpoints, asking hard questions, challenging our own thinking, and having thoughtful discussions as a team about what aligns with our values and what doesn’t.

We didn’t agree with everything we saw, that was taught, and ways that were handled. It was heavily dominated by trainers who have different values and beliefs than our training. And that’s okay! It led to some great discussion, and a confirmation of some of our values, as well as challenging some of our principles. Networking and making friends with those, even if they do things differently, is such a gift from workshops.

We came home with fresh perspectives, practical techniques we’re excited to begin incorporating into our training right away, and to teach our clients. It also led to a handful of bigger ideas that have us especially excited for what’s next at Trifecta 😉. There are already a few new things in the works, and we can’t wait to share them with all of you in the coming months.

We also want to say thank you to our amazing clients for your patience while we stepped away for a few days to invest in our education. We know rescheduling sessions isn’t always convenient, and we’re incredibly grateful for your flexibility.

Our goal has never been to simply train dogs. It’s to continually become better teachers for the people who love them. 💙
