Throwback Thursday with K9 Renzo!
Renzo joined the Lehi Police Department in 2006 and was teamed up with Officer T. Smith. Renzo was a 3.5 year Dutch Shephard who was very strong, very confident dog who was all business. In the beginning, Officer Smith and Renzo would struggle to bond. Renzo was a ALPHA male who did not want to submit to anyone.
Renzo quickly learned the odors of ma*****na, m**hamphetamine, he**in, co***ne, acid, and M**A. There are two different m**hods of alerting / or indicating on illegal narcotics. One is a passive indication, where the K9 will sit, or lay down. The other is an aggressive indicator. This was Renzo’s m**hod, in which he would scratch on the surface or area where the odor was coming from.
A few months later, Renzo and Officer Smith went to patrol school. This school would be the turning point in their relationship. Renzo and Officer Smith began to bond during this time. Renzo trained on area searches, building searches, vehicle extractions, water deployments and other patrol functions.
Renzo enjoyed going to work every day. He knew what his job was and did not need to be given a command to find the drugs. Renzo would just go to work. Renzo was responsible for removing countless amounts of illegal drugs from hitting the street. A few of his bigger finds were locating a pound of m**h on several occasions.
Renzo served the Lehi Police Department, and Lehi SWAT Team for almost 10 years before retiring in 2015, as the years of patrol work, constant training began to take a toll on his hips. Renzo was able to remain with his handler and family after he retired, where he was well loved and taken care of until he passed away in 2017.
Thank you for your service K9 Renzo!
