Dogs experience sleep cycles just like we do, including the REM stage where dreaming happens. If your pup twitches, paddles their paws, or softly barks in their sleep, they’re likely dreaming.

Dreaming is a sign of healthy brain activity, and good sleep is important for their overall wellness. If you notice unusual sleep behaviors, we can help rule out any underlying issues.

Did you know every dog has a unique nose print, much like a human fingerprint? 🐶 Their nose patterns are so distinct they can even be used for identification.

If your dog’s sense of smell seems off or their nose is unusually dry or cracked, it could be a sign of an underlying health issue. A check up can help ensure everything’s okay!

Many common houseplants can be harmful to dogs! 🐶

Plants like aloe vera, sago palm, and dieffenbachia can cause symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, or worse if ingested. Always double-check before bringing new plants into your home and call your vet if your dog chews on something suspicious.

🚨Warning: Graphic Images🚨

Did you know dog/cat toys are VERY common foreign body items??🐶😺
(A foreign body is any object ingested or inserted into the body that isn't naturally part of it) Examples: Coins, socks, sticks, corn cobs, etc. 🧦

-Symptoms vary based on the location and size of the foreign body, but can include pain, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, respiratory distress if the object obstructs the airway, and even death. (Tennis balls can block the airway completely!) 🎾

-Inducing vomiting🤢 does not always bring the item back up, in which case it would need removed surgically. Leaving the item can cause a gastric obstruction, blocking off food and fluids from passing to the intestines. Some items, such as bones and sticks, can splinter causing perforations.

It is SO important to keep potential hazards out of reach, and to monitor your pet during playtime.👀 Choosing the correct size toys will help reduce the risk of choking and foreign bodies. Preventing a foreign body is MUCH cheaper than the surgery!!!!💵

Here are images from a recent foreign body surgery performed by Dr. Meister! (Yes the toy was swallowed whole!)😱🐾

Serving Your Pets and Community Since 1975

Southwest Virginia Veterinary Services was established in 1975 by Drs. Bayard and Margaret (Peggy) Rucker following their graduation from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. Our new, beautifully maintained, the hospital was built in 1985, remodeled and added onto in 2008-2009 and is located just off the Highway 19 bypass in Lebanon. SVVS offers many features to meet the needs of you and your pet. We are a full-service facility offering complete surgical, radiological and medical care, including intensive care for those severely ill and/or injured patients.

Southwest Virginia Veterinary Services is proud to have achieved the accreditation of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). AAHA sets standards for veterinary hospitals to meet in areas such as patient care, client care, pain management and many others. We regularly undergo inspections to ensure we provide the highest quality care possible and make changes according to AAHA recommendations to remain progressive to serve our clients and patients. Ask one of our trained professionals more about AAHA standards when we come back.

At SVVS, we offer 24-hour emergency care for our current clients. Our hospital is a complete services facility, meaning we can do almost all diagnostic tests, such as x-rays, ultrasounds, blood tests, urinalyses, and f***l exams to make sure we can manage your pet’s emergency, regardless of the time of day. We also have complete surgical facilities to ensure that your pet gets the very best care in a timely fashion. We also offer boarding and grooming in addition to a full retail area where you can purchase grooming products, treats, and toys. We are proud to have canine basic obedience classes, as well as puppy socialization and beginner agility classes.

Since 1975, the mission of SVVS has been to make sure that both you and your pet receive the same care and compassion that we would want for our own family. All of us are pet owners, too…so we understand the connection you have with your pet and all the concerns and challenges you have in helping your pet live a happier, healthier, and longer life. We are pleased to be able to offer you and your pet the highest quality standard of care. We invite you to visit our website at www.svvspets.com to read about our wide range of services. Your call is important to us. Please stay on the line. We’ll be right back.
