We are proud participants of AKC's Canine Good Citizen program and have 3 AKC approved evaluators on staff, including Liz. All of her dogs have earned AKC Canine Good Citizen titles since the program's inception. Her dogs earned the Canine Good Citizen Advanced and Canine Good Citizen Urban titles as soon as those programs launched. She has earned AKC Advanced Trick Dog titles on her dogs as soon as that program went live. AKC's newest sport Fetch began testing dogs February 1, 2024 and Liz immediately took and passed the AKC Canine College's Fetch Judging course with perfect scores and received her first official AKC judging license. She immediately secured her first two judging assignments and hosted her first Fetch competition right here in Lawrence, KS in April of 2024. Liz organized a committee of 5 plus 2 more judges who served as host, secretary and chairman. The entire event was a resounding success, all coordinated by Liz. Her dogs passed each of their tests and received their first Fetch titles at this event. Liz has served as an approved AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator for decades, allowing her to teach STAR Puppy classes. Currently, Amber Albers-Miller is teaching Christal K-9's STAR Puppy Classes. Liz has earned Advanced Trick Dog titles on her dogs and has tested hundreds of dogs in CGC CGCA CGCU and Trick Dog, some of whom have gone on to serve as Therapy Dogs, Service Dogs and Emotional Support Dogs. In particular, Liz registered and trained our Master Groomer Sue's little Brussels Griffon mix named Scrappy, so he could accompanied Liz and Sue to all of her cancer related appointments, surgeries, consults and treatments, including chemo and radiation. Sue was Christal K-9's Master Groomer for 20+ years and worked side by side with Liz until the disease got the better of her. Our entire staff was devastated to learn that Sue lost her battle with breast cancer and went to meet all of her beloved pets and pets she cared for throughout her career, at the rainbow bridge on March 30, 2024. Sue will be remembered of fondly and missed by her Christal K-9 family and patrons. Christal K-9 has renovated it’s facilities to better serve our customers, improve safety, and create an even better environment for grooming, training, and caring for all of our beloved animal friends. We want to thank the community of Lawrence for years of love and support and look forward to continuing to serve our friends and neighbors while promoting the interests of pets!

Some extremely cold weather tips for your dog’s safety and comfort:
- If you need a coat to tolerate this cold weather your dog does as well.
- With sub zero wind chills dogs can suffer frostbite in as little as 20 minutes.
- The shorter a dog’s hair is and the smaller a dog is, the more susceptible they are to frostbite.
- Smaller body parts such as ears, tails and feet are particularly at risk of frostbite.
- if your dog must stay outside, provide them plenty of fresh straw and some kind of shelter from snow and wind.
- For outdoor dogs, check their water several times a day or preferably use a water heater made for this purpose.

We closed early today but will be ready to provide a climate controlled play option for dogs on Wednesday Feb 20th. Pictured are Carie’s dog Daisy (Mini Aussie), Joan Mcsweyn’s Gilligan (Great Pyrenees/Pointer) and Liz Devin’s Papillons Bijou & Charm having a slumber party at Liz’s house during the snowmageddon event in January.
We’re so glad we made the decision to bring all the dogs home during that storm to ensure they were well cared for, without putting our employees at risk of getting stuck in the snow. What absolutely perfect house guests all of the dogs were!

Amazing Dogs 🐶
On this day in 1928, Buddy, a German Shepherd, becomes the 1st guide dog for a US citizen Morris Frank.

Morris Frank was a blind man from Nashville. His father read him an article by Dorothy Eustis, a woman living in Switzerland who had seen shepherds training dogs to lead blind people get around. Excited by the idea, Frank wrote a letter to Eustis and received a response letter 30 days later inviting him to come see for himself. Frank then took a ship to Europe and trained extensively with a dog that had been bred specifically to lead a blind person. The training was hard, but after weeks with the dog, Frank could get around the nearby Swiss village holding tightly to a harness to which Buddy was strapped.

Morris Frank returned to America. From the day he got off the ship, he was successful. At one point, in front of a group of dumbfounded reporters, Buddy led Frank safely across a busy New York street. “I shall never forget the next three minutes, Ten-ton trucks rocketing past, cabs blowing their horns in our ears, drivers shouting at us. When we finally got to the other side, and I realized what a really magnificent job he had done” Frank later wrote.

When Frank returned to Nashville, people were amazed at the sight of the blind man and his dog successfully navigating busy sidewalks and couldn’t believe that it was the same blind boy they had so recently taken pity on. What amazed people the most was that Buddy had an ability best known as “intelligent disobedience,” which meant that he would obey Morris except when executing that command would result in harm to his master. If there was a low hanging branch ahead on the sidewalk, for instance, Buddy knew how to navigate around it to the point where Morris wouldn’t hurt his head on it.

About this time, Frank, Eustis and several others cofounded The Seeing Eye, an institution set up to train guide dogs and their blind masters. Today, the organization reports that it has, in its 80-year history, trained 14,000 dogs. Buddy is considered the first. In 1978, on the 50th anniversary of the founding of the school, the U.S. issued a commemorative stamp in honor of The Seeing Eye.

Welcome to AKC Fetch! When dog owners are asked about activities they like to do with their dogs, the most common responses are to take their dog for a walk and to play ball (fetch) with the dog.
