Dog Handlers Needed!

Are you an experienced dog handler wanting to learn more about positive reinforcement training while giving back to your community by spending much-needed time with shelter dogs?

Are you a certified R+ trainer wanting to donate some of your time in the shelter environment?

We are currently looking for both certified trainers and experienced handlers to join the Project Pup team. Opportunities available in both Pinellas and Hernando Counties.

The Project Pup Program works with dogs that are struggling in the shelter environment and may be at risk for euthanasia. Our goal is to bring more dogs to the adoption floor and setting them up for success in their new home.

If you are interested in learning more on how you can get involved, please reach out to [email protected].

🐾 Meet Barnaby! 🐾

Be sure to turn up the volume and hear Barnaby himself!

Barnaby, AKA Barnacle Bob - Project Pup Graduate, is a spring-loaded lowrider with a bodybuilder physique, a goofy personality, and a heart that's even bigger than he is. 💕 He's 2 years old, about 40 lbs, and currently couch-crashing in Largo, FL.

Barnaby has been abandoned more than once, so he needs a little time to warm up. Once he trusts you, he becomes your biggest fan (and your fiercest protector). 🥹 He's looking for someone patient who will let him decompress, take slow introductions, and show him he's finally HOME.

✅ Solo-dog home (Barnaby isn't into sharing toys, food, or water bowls)
✅ No young kids, please
✅ Patient adopter who'll go slow
✅ Bonus: the human who saved him is happy to help with training for life!

He loves plush beds, laps, and infinite cuddles. And sometimes he hops up on things like a little GOAT just to get a better look at the world. 🐐 (Yes, the costume photo is just for fun!)

📍 Available for adoption through First Ladies Farm and Sanctuary
📩 Message us to meet him and see if you're his happily-ever-after!

🐾 Two Short Stacks, Two Big Transformations! 🐾

We recently had two very special short stacks come through the Protecting Paws Project Pup Program, Barnaby AKA Barnacle Bob and Misha. 💜

Both were struggling with a fear of meeting new people. When someone reached over their heads, they would crouch down and back away. Instead of simply asking them to “get over it,” we took the time to show them that people can be friends and that human touch can be safe, gentle, and even comforting. 🥰

Through patience, positive reinforcement, and plenty of encouragement, they’ve been learning that hands can bring good things, people can be trusted, and they don’t have to be afraid. Watching them become more comfortable and confident has been incredibly rewarding!

🎓 Project Pup Graduate Spotlight

🐾 Barnaby AKA Barnacle Bob - handsome boy, 2 yrs old, 40lb
Barnaby is available for adoption through First Ladies Farm and Sanctuary.

🐾 Misha - sweet girl, 2 yrs old, 40lb
Misha is available for adoption through Pinellas County Animal Services.

These two are wonderful reminders that sometimes a dog just needs someone willing to slow down, listen, and teach them that the world can be a little less scary. 💜

Project Pup: Building confidence. Changing behavior. Creating better adoption opportunities. 🐾
