On June 13, an infested zone was established in Sutton County, Texas in association with a NWS detection in a sheep. The infested zone expands into portions of Sutton, Kimble, and Schleicher Counties.

The TAHC encourages you to visit screwworm.gov for individual animal cases and information. We will continue to report the establishment of new zones, but will transition to a bi-weekly situation report to share operational updates.

Just like livestock and wildlife, companion animals are also susceptible to New World screwworm (NWS), especially if they spend a lot of time outside.

Whether you are in a NWS-infested zone or not, the TAHC recommends all owners monitor their companion animals for suspicious wounds and signs of NWS. Talk to your vet about preventative products to use now and stay updated with Texas-specific NWS information on the TAHC NWS page: https://bit.ly/TAHC-NWS

On June 11, 2026, the seventh and eighth cases of NWS were confirmed- one in a Zavala County bovine and one in an Edwards County goat. Additional zones and changes to existing zones will be posted to the TAHC website and updated in the interactive map once they are officially established.

Animal owners should continue to be vigilant for suspicious wounds and comply with the movement restrictions in place. See if you're in an infested zone or surveillance zone here: https://bit.ly/NWS-ZoneMap

Curious about what red flags could indicate New World Screwworm in your dog? Here are the key warning signs pet owners should watch for.

The biggest red flag is a wound that looks worse than it should, especially if it is getting larger, draining, painful, has a foul odor, or contains maggots or larvae.

Not every maggot wound is screwworm, but any maggots in a living animalโ€™s wound should be treated as urgent until a veterinarian evaluates it.
