South Lansing Urban Gardens - SLUG

South Lansing Urban Gardens - SLUG Our SLUG program is a local farm facility that grows clean produce year-round. We grow in greenhouse, hoophouse, and in community garden space.

All produce is donated to the South Lansing community through food pantries and community kitchens. At Slug, we redefine the agricultural system by employing sustainable practices, community collaboration , and food accessibility promotion.

Last night (Wed, 2/5) was our first Asppire Winter/Spring class. Yes it's that time! I didn't take pictures because it was "lecture" night, my students favorite.

We talked about their plans for growing at home and with me at SLUG gardens. We talked about saving egg shells and banana peels for our plant fertilization this year. Most of our time was spent on Allium cepa. Yes Onions!
Why? Because here in Michigan starting onions from seed is one of the first things we do for summer gardening. We focused on growing from seed, where onion seeds come from, and types of onions we can grow in our zone. All colors, all flavors, how to store them, and what dishes work best for using them.
Of course my students never cease to amaze me. I actually have a few things to research because my old brain didn't remember the best answers! Way to go everyone for keeping me on my horticulture toes!
