Swipe left for “before.” What a difference three months makes in a baby mustang’s life!
Trying to show Frankie at his best, and looking back through all the documentation of our time together, I feel an incredible range of emotions. I’m so proud of this little horse and how much we’ve learned together since April. I’m excited to have another month and a half with Frankie and for the adventures still to come. I’m anticipating how hard it will be to say goodbye to this special horse and how much I hope he finds someone who thinks he’s as incredible as I do.
It can be hard to see change in the day-to-day. Sure, there are some big milestones: first touch, first haltering, first ride. Just like there are some big hurdles and setbacks: the fifth time he threw my saddle into the mud, that day he was so afraid of the tarp he tried to jump out of the arena. It’s not only the big things, though. It’s the tiny, daily, sometimes monotonous, occasionally frustrating, often joyful, frequently humbling questions and answers that make a partnership. That make a friend.
Frankie is an amazing friend. Kind, funny, personable, fair, willing, and game. He’s a horse who is inclined to say “yes” even when you flub the request. He has taught me to be softer and more aware, to always start with patience, and that trust is necessarily reciprocal.
I’d be happy to talk with anyone who thinks they might want to take this horse home in September. He’ll be available for public auction at the Meeker Mustang Makeover on 9/18-9/19. I’d also be thrilled to keep working with Frankie and his new owner after the sale.
