🐾 PAWS & LEARN FRIDAY: Support vs. Service — What’s the Difference? 🐾
There is a special kind of magic in the bond between humans and working animals.
We see dogs out and about helping people feel better and stay safe every day. But have you ever wondered what goes into a working animal's "job" description?
Out here in Lander, we always look out for our neighbors — whether we're fixing a fence together or helping someone through a tough time.
Knowing how these working animals do their jobs helps us take better care of both our people and our pets.
Here is a quick, simple breakdown of how emotional, service, and therapy animals differ:
🩺 Medical Service Dogs
The Role: Individually trained to perform specific, life-saving tasks for a person with a disability.
The Tasks: Alerting a handler to an oncoming seizure, guiding someone with visual impairment, or detecting low blood sugar.
The Access: Protected by federal law to accompany their handler anywhere the public is allowed, including Lander shops and restaurants.
Lander Vibe: They are strictly on the job! When you see a service dog working around town, give them space and hold back on petting so they can focus on keeping their human safe.
❤️ Emotional Support Animals (ESA)
The Role: Provide therapeutic comfort, affection, and a calming presence to ease anxiety, depression, or loneliness.
The Tasks: No specialized task training is required; their wonderful, loving presence is the healing power itself.
The Access: They do not have public access rights like service dogs, but they qualify for housing protections under federal law.
Lander Vibe: Many of our shelter alumni excel at this! There is nothing quite like a Lander Pet Connection rescue pup or kitty to greet you after a long day out in the Wind Rivers.
🏠 Therapy Animals
The Role: Trained and certified with their owners to volunteer and bring joy to groups of people.
The Tasks: Visiting schools, libraries, or senior living communities to lower stress and put smiles on faces.
The Access: Allowed into specific facilities only by invitation or pre-arranged volunteer programs.
