🎃Tomorrow is Halloween! 👻 Here are some tips on how to make it a safe and happy holiday for your pet.🚫🍫

🧡If you plan on dressing your pet up for the event, use simple costumes that are comfortable for your pet to wear and do not restrict movement. Don't wear anything on your pet that covers their eyes or ears or has loose pieces that could be chewed off. If your pet absolutely hates or is stressed by being dressed up, it is not worth the increased anxiety caused.

‼️Avoid an ER visit by keeping all chocolate and candy out of reach of your pets. Even a small amount, depending on what it is and how much your pet weighs, can be extremely dangerous for your pet.

🔔The ringing doorbell, knocking on the door, and other excessive noises can be distressing to your pet. Make sure to keep your anxious kittys or overwhelmed doggies in a secure, quiet area.

🐾There is a huge risk of escape with the door being opened and closed so many times during the trick-or-treat festivities. Be sure your pet is wearing a collar with an ID tag and that their microchip information is up to date.

🍫Today is 'National Chocolate Day,' 🍪🍩a time to remind everyone that as much as we enjoy chocolate (I mean, seriously, who doesn't?)
It is unfortunately extremely toxic to our beloved pets. 😱
Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, both of which are dangerous to your pet. ‼️
Dogs and cats metabolize these things differently and much more slowly than we do, making them more sensitive to their effects.

🚨October is 'Obesity Awareness Month,' a good reminder that: Obesity in cats and dogs can contribute to diabetes, joint issues like arthritis, respiratory problems, increased surgical/anesthetic risk, and decreased life span.😓
It is so important to control how much your pet eats and what they eat, feed in meals (not free feed), exercise your pet, and stay consistent with it all. 📞Reach out to your vet if you need help figuring out how to manage your pet's weight.🩺
*It is always a good idea to check a baseline blood panel 💉🩸on your pet to rule out any health conditions that could be contributing to weight gain.

🚨Dog Toys to Avoid:
-Rawhide (too hard, choking hazard)⚠️
-Antlers, pig ears, hooves of any kind (too hard, can splinter)🐷
-Toys with stuffing or foam (too soft, risk of obstruction)‼️
-Toys with long strips of yarn or ribbon (risk of obstruction)👎🏻
-Toys with small pieces that can break off and be swallowed or that have sharp or metal pieces.🚫
*Toys that are too hard can fracture or break your dog's teeth. Toys that come apart in pieces or can be chewed up or swallowed are a choking hazard and pose a threat of causing a gi obstruction or foreign body.😞

👍🏻How to Choose the Right Toy for Your Dog:
-Know your dog: ❤️
~Is your dog a big chewer? If so, choose a toy that is safe for excessive chewing but not too hard that it could cause broken teeth.🦷
~Does your dog eat things they are not supposed to? Then, a soft toy that poses a risk of gi obstruction is not the right choice.🧸
~Does your dog enjoy ripping apart toys but does not eat the loose pieces? They may be able to handle the softer toys then. It all depends on what your dog is into.🐶

🔆Remember to always supervise your dog when they are playing with a new toy and provide plenty of exercise/enrichment to try to reduce destructive chewing.
🔆Pick the right size toy for your dog’s weight.
🔆Try a puzzle feeder for an interactive toy that will keep your dog busy and that is generally safe to use unsupervised.
