Human Medications Can Be Dangerous for Pets

When our pets aren't feeling well, it can be tempting to reach for something in the medicine cabinet—but many human medications can be harmful, and even deadly, to pets. 🚫🐾

Common medications that should never be given without veterinary guidance include:
⚠️ Ibuprofen (Advil®, Motrin®)
⚠️ Acetaminophen (Tylenol®)
⚠️ Naproxen (Aleve®)
⚠️ Cold and flu medications
⚠️ Prescription medications meant for people

🐾 A Microchip is More Than a Tiny Chip—It’s Your Pet’s Ticket Home! 🏡❤️
Did you know a microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and is placed just under your pet’s skin between the shoulder blades? The process is quick, safe, and similar to receiving a routine vaccination.

How does it work?
A microchip is not a GPS tracker and cannot track your pet's location. Instead, it contains a unique identification number that can be scanned by animal shelters, veterinary clinics, and animal control officers. That number is linked to your contact information in a secure database.

Why is updating your information so important?

A microchip only works if the contact information attached to it is current. If you've moved, changed phone numbers, or transferred ownership of your pet, be sure to update your microchip registration right away. An outdated microchip can make it difficult to reunite lost pets with their families.

☀️ Florida Heat Alert for Pet Parents! 🐾

If it's hot for you, it's even hotter for your pets.

When the air temperature reaches 85°F, asphalt can heat up to nearly 130°F. At 95°F, pavement temperatures can soar past 150°F—hot enough to burn paw pads in seconds.

Prolonged exposure to heat can cause:
🐕 Heat exhaustion
🐈 Heatstroke
💧 Severe dehydration
❤️ Organ damage
🚨 In extreme cases, death

Watch for warning signs:
• Excessive panting
• Drooling
• Lethargy
• Vomiting
• Difficulty walking
• Bright red gums

Keep your furry family members safe by:
✅ Walking early in the morning or after sunset
✅ Testing pavement with the back of your hand for 7 seconds before walks
✅ Providing plenty of fresh, cool water
✅ Offering shade and air conditioning whenever possible
✅ Limiting outdoor play during the hottest parts of the day
✅ Never leaving pets in parked vehicles—even for a minute

Just like people, pets experience different stages of sleep and can dream! If you've ever seen your dog softly barking, twitching their paws, or your cat's whiskers moving while they nap, they may be dreaming about their day. While we can't know exactly what's happening in their dreams, scientists believe pets often process experiences and memories while they sleep ☁️

Cats use their claws for balance, stretching, climbing, self-defense, and other natural feline behaviors. Getting your pet to take medication can sometimes be a challenge, but a few simple tricks can help make the process easier for both of you 💊

Try hiding pills in a favorite treat, wet food, or a small amount of another pet-safe food. For liquid medications, ask your veterinary team about proper administration techniques and whether the medication can be flavored.

Remember: Never stop a prescribed medication early without consulting your veterinarian, even if your pet seems to be feeling better 🐾
