April is Heartworm Awareness Month, here are some facts about Heartworms and Heartworm disease:
*Heartworm disease is caused by parasitic worms (Dirofilaria immitis) that live in the heart and lungs of infected animals.
*Mosquitoes transmit heartworm larvae, which develop into adult worms over several months.
*Symptoms may include coughing, difficulty breathing, weight loss, and lethargy.
*Heartworm disease is preventable through regular heartworm testing and preventative medication.
*All dogs and cats in areas where heartworms are present should receive preventative medication year-round.
*Medication is typically administered monthly or every six months, depending on the animal's risk factors.
