With air quality concerns across Illinois today, it’s important to remember that our horses are affected too. Poor air quality can increase the risk of respiratory irritation, reduced performance, and can worsen existing respiratory conditions.
Use the Air Quality Index (AQI) as a guide before riding or working your horse:
🟢 0–50: Normal work
🔵 51–100: Normal work, but horses with respiratory issues should take it easy
🟠 101–150: Reduce to light work
🔴 151–200: Slow walks or rest
🟣 201+: Give your horse the day off and allow time to recover
A day of rest is always better than risking your horse’s health. Monitor your local AQI, provide plenty of fresh water, and watch for signs like coughing, nasal discharge, or labored breathing.
Stay safe, stay informed, and always put your horse’s well-being first.🤠🐴
