Remember when Nancy said, “I’M NOT OVERWINTERING ANYTHING! I have a HUGE remodeling project and absolutely NO time or space!”?

Well… apparently, this Nancy didn’t get that memo. 🤦‍♀️🤣

Meet our newest intake! This little sploot queen will most likely be overwintering with us. ❤️

Does NNWR currently HAVE an overwintering squirrel enclosure? NO.

Will we need one ASAP? YES.

Will she probably need a couple of roommates? ALSO YES. 🐿️🐿️🐿️

So, naturally, we’re adding another project to the never-ending project list. Because what’s a little more chaos when tiny lives need us? 😂❤️

🦝 Did you know that adult raccoons are currently the ONLY mammal species that Northern Neck Wildlife Rescue does not accept for rehabilitation?

And yes, there’s a reason!

We do accept neonate raccoons (baby raccoons) when necessary, but only as a temporary placement until another licensed rehabber is able to take them.

So why the limitation?

Raccoons can carry a number of viruses, parasites, and other pathogens that may have little or no effect on a healthy raccoon but can pose serious risks to other wildlife species. Because of that, raccoons really need dedicated caging, equipment, cleaning supplies, and ideally a separate rehabilitation area.

Right now, as a one-woman operation, I simply don't have the resources to dedicate an entire space to one species. And I would rather be honest about that than accept an animal I cannot safely house and care for properly.

But I'm hoping that's going to change. 🦝❤️

This fall and winter, I'm hoping to completely rebuild and expand our wildlife rehabilitation area. If we're able to accomplish the project as planned, it will eventually include a dedicated outdoor raccoon enclosure, allowing NNWR to accept a limited number of adult raccoons.

That said, the raccoon enclosure will be last on the list.
The animals we currently have the ability to safely care for come first. Our priority is making sure the species already within our program have the space, housing, and resources they need before we expand.

🦊 NORTHERN NECK WILDLIFE RESCUE
NEEDS OUR COMMUNITY! 🦊

This fall and winter, we’re completely redoing our outdoor wildlife enclosure area! Y’all are gonna think, “This rehabber has done gone and plum lost her mind…” 😂 What can I say? I have big dreams. And thankfully, I also have a VERY supportive husband who is willing to turn my crazy sketches into reality. 🤣
So really, we need materials… and maybe a couple beers for the builder. 🤭🍻

💰 And just to give you an idea of the scale of this project: if we went out and bought everything at retail, I estimate the entire project would cost NNWR around $30,000. (Thats before the toys, enrichment and goodies!)😳
That’s exactly why I’m asking our community first! If we can find leftover materials, used supplies, donations, and good deals, we can hopefully bring that number WAY down. Every piece helps!

🔨 WE NEED:
• 6-ft wooden fence pickets — cedar preferred, treated okay
• Treated 4x4s — 6 or 12 ft
• Treated 2x4s & 2x6s
• Sheet metal / roofing panels
• Hardware cloth
• Chicken wire
• Outdoor dog kennels
• Privacy screen
• Shade cloth

🐴 HORSE STALL MATS
These make great flooring for many of our enclosures, but they get expensive FAST when you need a bunch. If you have old or leftover mats from a barn project, PLEASE think of us! We’d love to give them a second life.

💧 PLUMBING & DRAINAGE
• PVC pipe & fittings
• Gutters & downspouts
• Drainage supplies
• Valves, connectors, etc.
My dream is to eventually have automatic waterers, a faucet in every enclosure, AND a proper drainage system. 😂 Is that a little ambitious? Probably. Am I still going to try? Absolutely.

And if anybody happens to know where we can find a mini excavator at the cheap end of the spectrum… my husband would probably kiss you. 😂 We have A LOT of digging, drainage, and enclosure work ahead of us, and having access to one would make this project approximately 847 times easier. 🤣

What can I say? I have big dreams. He has a shovel. We need a mini excavator, and a lot of help! 😂

🦌🌿 Baby season is coming to an end! 🌿🦌

That means things will be a little quieter around here for the next few months, which gives me a chance to catch my breath, prepare for next season, and focus on fundraising during the off-season! 💚

I’m already starting to plan for our fall festivals and community events, and today our first little fundraising goodies arrived!
