Last week I was in Ocala Florida with a group of peers as part of my continuing education in Equine Nutrition. We had an amazing time. Here's a synopsis of our farm visits:

1. OBS feed mill to see how different feeds are manufactured.
2. Oak Ridge Training Center to discuss nutrition of thoroughbreds for race and sales day.
3. Hyatt Training Facility to discuss nutrition and pasture management.
4. Coach Driving Farm to discuss nutrition and care of warmbloods and ponies for coach driving.
5. 50 mile Endurance race vet check station to discuss nutrition and sustenance of endurance athletes.
6. Visited Autumn Schweiss Eventing to discuss nutrition and supplements for eventing horses.
7. We watched Grand Prix jumping at the World Equestrian Center.

I had an amazing trip, thanks to our mentor Dr. Rachel Mottet

SALT!

What is the best salt to feed your horse?

Here's a tip... the best salt is the salt that your horse will eat enough of.

Whether is is the white salt block, loose table salt, pink salt, the list goes on... some horses prefer loose salt, others do fine with salt blocks.

Do you use white and red salt blocks? Here's a tip. The red blocks that are trace mineral blocks are about 95% salt. So the minerals aren't present in sufficient quantities to be useful as a "mineral block". It's essentially a salt block with a smidgen of trace minerals, and iron oxide added for color.

Other salt forms available include fly control feedthru. Feedthru should be started at least 1 month before the flies come out.

Have a great day!

Horse p**p! A great indicator of overall gut health. What does it look like? What does it smell like? Is it formed and firm? Is it loose and splattered? Is it accompanied with f***l water?

You could spend money on various fiber supplements, or i could analyze your horses the diet and provide a plan to achieve your goals of a healthy digestive system.

Iv seen everything from psyllium, to flax, chia, probiotics, beet pulp, and in the majority of cases, they didn't help.

Can you tell the difference between diarrhea loose stools and f***l water?

A healthy digestive system is able to synthesize B vitamins, absorb dietary vitamins and minerals, provide energy to the body, and maintain a healthy immune system. Horse manure provides a clue as to the functioning of the digestive system.

Contact me if you need your horses diet analyzed to resolve manure and digestive problems.

It's that time again... grass is growing and this PPID pony needs a muzzle. His progress has been amazing since starting daily Prascend and keeping a close eye on his dietary requirements and hoof care.

Do you have a plan for your horses nutrition now that spring is around the corner? Is it time to rethink your metabolic or PPID horse's diets?
