Equine Welfare Society The Equine Welfare Society is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit located in Keswick, Virginia.

Our goals at the Equine Welfare Society are to prevent horses from becoming unwanted and to create adoptable horses by retraining rescue horses with marketable skills, educating people on the responsibility of horse ownership, basic horse husbandry and responsible breeding and making available low or no-cost fertility control and/or basic veterinary care.

🕺🏻Sonny's Story

Sonny is a handsome, young gelding who comes to us through Virginia Equine Welfare Society (VEWS). Born into a reputable breeding program that became a neglect situation, he, as well as almost one hundred other Thoroughbreds, were seized by animal control. Sonny was placed with Central Virginia Horse Rescue and then taken into Rapidan Equine Sanctuary where he was able to mature. Now that he is old enough to be started under saddle, he was transferred to the program at VEWS for adoption and is now with us for training! We can't wait to learn more about him!!

Today is farrier day! Thank you Ben Ruhlman for respecting each horse as an individual. Our goal is to is to find the simplest management plan to achieve comfortable hooves free of issues. Champ has large, strong, and healthy hooves that should only need a routine balanced trim by his future adopter.
