📣 EHV-1 Positive Case Alert: 📣

There was a positive case of EHV-1 Neurologic form at HITS Culpeper on 4/17/26.

42 horses housed in Barn 5 at the showgrounds have been placed under quarantine by the state vet. The positive horse’s home facility has also been placed under mandated quarantine.

The Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) remains the best place to get updated outbreak information:
https://www.equinediseasecc.org/alerts

What to do if your horse attended the show?

🌡 Monitor your horse’s temperature twice per day for 14 days. Any horses with a fever (temp greater than 101.5 F) should be tested for EHV-1.

If your horse was not in barn 5, and if you have not been placed under a quarantine by the state vet, then your horse is not considered directly exposed.

Horses with no direct exposure have no mandated movement restrictions at this time.

📌 Upcoming shows:

If you have any shows coming up, please check in with the host facility for any updated restrictions/rules they may be implementing for their facility.

Two positive cases of EHV-1 were reported on February 24, 2026 at a farm in Louisa County, Virginia. We are not concerned, however we want to be proactive in our communication with the horse community.

Facts:

The affected farm has been quarantined and there is no evidence the disease spread beyond their property.

Contact tracing has been completed, and if additional facilities were affected, the owners would have been notified during that process.

The State Veterinarian is supervising the quarantined farm and actively communicating.

Farm employees have been trained on biosecurity.

EHV-1 is a common disease and veterinarians are familiar with preventing its spread

The single best source for updated case and outbreak information is the EDCC (Equine Disease Communication Center) Website: https://www.equinediseasecc.org/

What you can do:

Ensure that your horse has been vaccinated for flu/rhino in the last 6 months.

Note: the vaccine does not protect against EHM, the neurologic form of EHV but it reduces viral shedding, which decreases the spread of the disease to other horses.

Monitor your horse’s temperature.

Normal temperature: 99-101*F

If your horse develops a fever (temp greater than 101.5) or new respiratory signs (nasal discharge, cough), place them in a quarantine area away from other healthy horses until you receive further guidance from your veterinarian. Ensure they can have no nose to nose contact with other horses.

If your horse becomes ill, your veterinarian will advise the following:

Wash hands with soap and water, and utilize foot baths (dilute bleach, or chlorhexidine solution) after interacting with quarantined horses.

Do not share equipment between horses (brushes, tack, buckets, pitch forks, muck tub, etc).

Reduce traffic (human and animal) at your barn. Ensure visitors follow quarantine and biosecurity guidelines.

Change your clothes in between farms if applicable.

Handle the sick/quarantined horse after handling all of the healthy horses. Tasks such as feeding, haying, grooming, turnout, mucking stalls.

If you have any additional concerns, feel free to call our office at 434-951-9225.

Updates on current disease outbreaks are listed here as they occur and will include the date listed, disease name, location and current status. Specific premises will not be named but the general location by town, county and state will be listed. When locations, events or horses are at risk they wil...

🩺ISO: Insulin Dysregulation Study Candidates🩺

🐴 Is your horse gaining weight, low on energy, or showing odd fat deposits?

Your horse may be dealing with insulin dysregulation - a condition that can quietly affect weight, energy, hoof health, and behavior.
If diet and exercise haven't helped, your horse may qualify for Boehringer Ingelheim's EQUIDY clinical study
👉 https://equidy.boehringer-ingelheim.com/

The study is exploring a potential new treatment option for insulin dysregulation, as there are currently no FDA approved medications for the condition.

❓ Does my horse qualify?
- Is your horse at least 2 years old?
- Has your horse shown signs of insulin dysregulation? This includes one or more of the following: a fatty or cresty neck; unusual fat deposits around the shoulders or tailhead; gaining weight on a restricted diet; low energy or reluctance to work; an "easy keeper"; a history of "founder" or laminitis?
- Have you tried managing it with diet or exercise for at least 6 weeks?

If you answered yes to all of these questions, your horse may qualify for this study.
📧 Please reach out to Dr. Libby Goldstein at [email protected] and make sure to include your name, your horse's name, and where the horse is located and we will be in touch.

📋 What to expect if your horse joins the study:
- Most visits happen at your horse's location
- Screening testing will be done first to see if your horse qualifies
- About 11 farm visits over approximately 20 weeks
- Partial fasting required for up to 4 key study visits
- No changes to your horse's diet or daily management during the study
- Use a simple phone app to log daily medication
- Study medications (or placebo), exams, and lab work are provided at no cost
- You may be eligible to receive up to $400 compensation if your horse completes the study

11/25/2025

With the recent EHV cases linked to the Waco, TX outbreak, we want to share key reminders for keeping your horses safe:

✅ Risk in Virginia remains low unless horses have traveled to the affected events in TX/OK.
✅ The Maryland case is not related to the Texas outbreak.
🗺️ Confirmed linked cases so far: TX, OK, LA, WA, SD, CO, NM, AZ
(per EDCC https://www.equinediseasecc.org/).

Biosecurity Essentials
• Clean equipment and surfaces with detergent + water; accelerated hydrogen peroxide is preferred.
• Avoid sharing equipment unless cleaned/disinfected between horses.
• Wash hands between handling horses.
• Communicate with farm staff, vets, and farriers about exposure risks.

Vaccination Notes
• Healthy horses can receive a flu/rhino booster during an outbreak.
• Do not vaccinate horses showing clinical symptoms.
• Vaccines help reduce respiratory disease and viral spread—but do not prevent EHM.

If Your Barn Has Known Exposure
• Separate traveled vs. non-traveled horses.
• Take baseline temps and monitor closely—small temperature increases matter.
• Expect signs within 24–48 hours.
• Quarantine 21–28 days after the last positive case (or until two negative tests 5–7 days apart).

If you have concerns, questions, or need guidance, please reach out to your veterinarian.
