Woodwind players, your reed is not supposed to last forever.
My tip is to keep a few good reeds ready instead of playing the same one until it finally gives up.

And if it's chipped, cracked or warped?
Thank it for its service and let it go. Or make some funky art piece out of it. Either way, it needs to be changed out.
Your instrument AND your ears will appreciate it.

"I shook it."
"I blew really hard."
"I hit the key a few times."
"My friend looked at it."
"I figured it would work itself out."

If you've reached any of these stages, then it's time to bring it in.

Saxophone and clarinet players:
That little mouthpiece cap in your case has a real job.
➡️Use it.
It helps protect the reed and mouthpiece when you're not playing and can prevent accidental chips and damage. It also keeps the cheese from your Doritos that I've previously mentioned shouldn't be in your case. 🤢

🔹Small piece.
🔹Easy habit.
🔹One less thing for me to repair. 😜

School is back, rehearsals are happening and instruments are getting used regularly again.

This is when little problems start making themselves known.

A key feels different. A valve gets sluggish. A cork gets loose. Something starts making a noise it didn't make before.

Don't wait for "different" to become "broken."
Around here we work on a first come, first served basis, and the repair bench gets busy in the "fall" season.

The school year is just getting started.

Before rehearsals, concerts, and football games fill the calendar, make sure your instrument is ready too. If something doesn't sound right, feel right, or move right, don't wait.

Starting the year with an instrument in good playing condition makes learning, practicing and performing a whole lot easier.

One thing I've learned after more than 40 years repairing woodwind and brass instruments...

Small problems almost never stay small.
A loose screw.
A sticky pad.
A slow valve.
They usually don't fix themselves.

Taking care of them early almost always saves time, money, and frustration.
Stop by the shop to a chat and let us take a look at your instrument.

One of the best things you can do for your instrument takes less than five minutes.

✔ Swab it after playing.
✔ Wipe off fingerprints.
✔ Put it back in the case.
✔ Close the latches.

Small habits help instruments last for years.

Not every playing problem is a practice problem.
Sometimes it's the instrument.

If your child suddenly starts struggling with notes they could play before, it may be time for a quick inspection instead of extra frustration. The shop is open from Monday to Thursday 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
