Nils Olav III currently resides in the Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland. He is the mascot and Commander of the Norwegian Royal Guard. A penguin has held this position since 1972. When the Royal Guard visited Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the lieutenant became interested in the zoo’s penguin colony. When the guards returned to Edinburgh, the lieutenant made arrangements to adopt a penguin. The penguin was named Nils Olav after Nils Egelien and King Olav V of Norway.

Don't Over-Protect Children from Grief
Dr. Sife (founder of the APLB) in 'The Loss of a Pet' is clear: over-protecting children from the reality of a pet's death does more harm than good. Children need honesty appropriate to their age — and to feel like a meaningful part of what's happening, not shielded from it.
