🐾💜WE LOVE ALUMNUS UPDATES💜🐾

It has officially been two years since we came home with these two fur balls! Formerly known as Asher and Abby, Buba and Harley have been amazing! They both of course still love eating snow, along with on sunny days they are laying wherever they can soak up the rays, they are constantly running around playing, and when it’s time for bed they both curl up right next to us.All I have to do is mention cuddle to Buba and he’ll be sprawled out across my body, always ready for an endless about of love! And not to mention he throws a fit if there isn’t any room for him! Harley only likes to cuddle when it’s on her terms but she is just as much of a love bug, constantly pushing her head through my legs to get some scratchies! They both have their quirks but none of them being bad, I call Harley my little crackhead most of the time! We are working on a fence so I am excited to give them some space to get their energy out and just have a place to run! I know in a world of not so good news, it’s nice to see a little light here and there! I hope you all are doing good! 😌

🐾💙 BIG NEWS FOR OUR SHELTER DOGS & OUR COMMUNITY! 💙🐾

We are SO excited to announce that Houlton Humane Society is partnering with Purpose Pups Elite Dog Training to bring group dog training classes right here to our area! 🐶

And believe us… our shelter dogs need this! ❤️

Many of the dogs coming through our doors have never been taught how to properly walk on a leash, greet another dog, focus around distractions, or simply understand what is expected of them. Some are nervous, some are overexcited, and some have never had the opportunity to learn.

Our goal isn’t just to find them a home. We want to help them become better canine citizens so they have the best possible chance of staying in that home. 🏡🐾

Purpose Pups brings experience working with 5,000+ dogs and will be helping us with things like:

🐾 Basic & advanced obedience
🐾 Leash manners & recall
🐾 Socialization
🐾 Confidence building
🐾 Reactive dog work
🐾 Real-world distractions
🐾 Learning how to properly read and understand our dogs

But here’s the really exciting part…
This isn’t just for shelter dogs! These classes are also an opportunity for people in our community to learn how to better communicate with and understand their own dogs. ❤️

A well-trained dog isn’t just easier to live with — training can help prevent problems, strengthen the bond between people and their dogs, and ultimately keep more dogs in their homes.

We are incredibly excited to have Purpose Pups coming to Houlton and can’t wait to see what this partnership can do for our dogs and our community!

📣 If you’ve ever thought, “My dog could use some training,” this is your chance!

📞 Call or text Purpose Pups at 207-694-8227 for information about upcoming classes.

We love your dogs first. Train them second. 💙🐾

🐾 SPONSOR A SHELTER DOG FOR TRAINING 🐾

If anyone is interested in sponsoring a shelter dog to receive professional training, please contact the Shelter Manager by email at [email protected].

Please put “SPONSOR A SHELTER DOG FOR TRAINING” in the subject line so I can easily identify your email.

Your sponsorship will help give one of our shelter dogs the training and skills they need to become a better canine citizen and have a better chance at finding—and keeping—a forever home. ❤️🐾

Every dog deserves a chance. Thank you for helping give them theirs! ❤️

💜 MEET OUR SPECIAL WOBBLY KITTEN 💜
We have a litter of kittens who recently came into the shelter, and one little guy has something that makes him a little different—and a whole lot special. 🐾

He has Cerebellar Hypoplasia (CH), often lovingly called “Wobbly Cat Syndrome.” Interestingly, his dad also has CH, so this little guy came by his wobbles honestly! 😻

There is also a really positive part to this story that we want to share.
His owner brought Mom to us through our Kitten Exchange Program, where we help get moms spayed and make sure they receive the care they need then mom is returned no charge.

The owner also brought Dad in to our August spay/neuter clinic to be neutered, this not only stops continue producing kittens, it also stops passing this condition along.

That is exactly what responsible pet ownership looks like. ❤️

So, what does CH mean for this little guy?

Cerebellar Hypoplasia affects the part of the brain responsible for coordination and balance. These kittens can have a wobbly, unsteady walk, exaggerated movements, or difficulty doing things that come naturally to other cats. The severity can range from very mild to more noticeable. Yes his is more noticeable but not severe.

❤️ CH is not painful. It is not contagious. And it does not mean this kitten can’t have an amazing, happy life.

Adopting a CH kitten does require a little extra patience and some adjustments. He may need a safer environment, fewer opportunities to fall, food and water dishes that are easy to reach, and someone willing to let him do things at his own pace.
But he can still play.
He can still purr.
He can still love you.
He can still be silly.
And he can still be an absolutely wonderful companion. ❤️
Adopting a CH cat may be a little more challenging, but it can also be incredibly rewarding.
You aren’t adopting a “broken” cat. You’re adopting a cat who does things a little differently—and once you get to know him, you may not even notice the wobble anymore. You’ll just see him. 🥹💜

We are looking for that very special person or family who is willing to look past the wobbles and see the amazing little kitten underneath.
If you think you might be that person, please reach out to Houlton Humane Society. We would be happy to talk with you about what life with a CH cat looks like and help you decide if this special little guy is the right match for you.

Sometimes the ones who wobble their way into your heart stay there forever. 💜🐾

PS. He isn’t ready to go home yet. He needs to be neutered and then he’ll be ready for his forever home.

🐾❤️Give Them the Second Chance They Deserve. ❤️🐾

Adopting a dog from a shelter means giving them a chance to experience the life they should have had all along. Their first chapter may have been filled with neglect, disappointment, or just plain crappy circumstances—but that doesn’t have to be how their story ends.

When you open your home to a shelter dog, you’re not just gaining a pet. You’re giving them a second chance at life, love, stability, and a family of their own.

They may come with some baggage. They may need patience, training, and time to learn what it means to be loved. But watching them slowly come out of their shell, learn to trust, and realize they are finally safe… that is something truly special.

Their first life may have been crappy.
You can help make their next chapter amazing. 🐶❤️

Adopt. Be patient. Don’t give up. Give them the life they’ve always deserved. 🐾

🐾💗 6 lucky kittens found their people! 💗🐾

Though I didn't get a picture of every one here are a few.❤️

Out of the 25 kittens currently awaiting homes, 6 were lucky enough to be picked today! 🥰🏡

That means 6 more tiny lives get to know what it feels like to be loved, spoiled, and part of a family. We couldn’t be happier for these little ones! 🐱❤️

But don’t worry… we still have plenty of kittens waiting for their turn! If you’ve been thinking about adding a furry little friend to your family, now is the time! 🐾✨

Adopt. Love. Save a life.
