National Pet Week
Day 4 theme: Travel With Care

If your vacation includes your fur babies, here's a few tips to ensure happy travels.

Make sure your pet has identification tags with up-to-date information.

Update all information for your pet's microchip.

Create a list of Veterinarians and 24 hour Emergency Hospitals along your route and close to your destination.

Your vehicle can quickly reach a temperature that puts your pet at risk of serious illness or death—even on a day that doesn't seem that hot, and even if the car is left in the shade. Cracking the windows makes no difference.

Just as we should always wear seatbelts to protect ourselves in case of a traffic accident, so should our pets always be properly restrained. This means using an appropriate safety harness, crate, or carrier to keep them in.

Hitting the road with your pet? This National Pet Week, learn more about what you’ll need to ensure your trip is a happy and memorable one.

Approximately 61% of cats and 59% of dogs are classified as overweight or obese. Obese pets are at risk for developing weight related health issues such as diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, kidney disease, cancer, breathing problems, and more. Maintaining a healthy weight gives your pet the best chance for a long, healthy life.
Exercising with your pet can improve cardiovascular health, help maintain a healthy weight, improve mental health, and strengthen the human-animal bond.
If you're uncertain whether your pet is overweight or if the diet you are feeding is healthy, speak with our doctors at your pet's next exam.

Puppies & kittens need socialization to help them (and you) enjoy life to the fullest. Ideally you want your puppy or kitten to thrive around other people, places, and activities. The best time period is between 3 and 14 weeks of age for puppies, and 3 to 9 weeks of age for kittens.
How to help your new puppy or kitten:
1 - Include a wide range of positive experiences in the types of experiences your pet will most likely encounter throughout their life.
2 - Provide praise, play, and treats for positive behavior.
3 - Consider enrolling you puppy in socialization classes.
4 - If your kitten or puppy is not fully vaccinated, STAY AWAY from other animals with an unknown vaccination status and places those animals may have been (dog parks).
5 - Speak with the veterinarian to create a plan which will gradually expose your puppy or kitten to new experiences, people, places, and activities.
6 - Move at a pace that's right for your pet. Always allow your pet to withdraw if they are uncomfortable.

If you plan on getting a pet for the first time or adding an addition to your family, choosing well can make all the difference.
1 - What type of pet should you get?
2 - Can you afford the costs of caring for your pet?
3 - How long will you be away from your pet?
4 - Who will care for your pet if your away?
5 - What changes might happen to your living situation that would affect whether or not you can keep your pet?
6 - Are you able to provide the amount of attention your pet needs?
7 - Do you currently have pets? If you do, will your current pet accept another pet?
8 - What are you looking for in a pet; a snuggle buddy, a walking buddy, or a pet that's easy to care for?
